Join a talented team of Facilities department professionals at Ball State University. The Facilities department has an opening for a Director of Construction. The Director of Construction will direct and oversee construction of new university projects and major renovations to existing building and campus infrastructure; ensure that established university specifications and performance standards are met including construction schedule, cost, quality, and project safety requirements; and assign and direct work of campus construction managers. Position Function
Direct and oversee construction of new university projects and major renovations to existing building and campus infrastructure; ensure that established university specifications and performance standards are met including construction schedule, cost, quality, and project safety requirements. Assign and direct work of campus construction managers.
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in architecture, engineering, construction management, or related field.
Minimum Experience
At least ten years of progressively responsible experience with a professional/
architectural/planning/engineering/construction firm, or related design or consulting firm or in a similar position within a facilities management entity; proven experience with construction contract administration.
Minimum Other
Comprehensive knowledge of architectural design, technical engineering principles and construction management; considerable knowledge of construction materials, methods, and practices; excellent writing skills and knowledge of computer spreadsheet, database, and project scheduling software; ability to effectively communicate with university and governmental officials, consultants, and contractors.
Authorization to work in the US
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Public agency or university experience.
Preferred Other
Professional registration in architecture, engineering, construction management.

Coordinate construction activities to minimize disruptions to university activities; arrange for relocations and move-in activities as needed. Prior to construction, review construction plans and specifications for construction feasibility and for compliance with university design guidelines.

Conduct pre-bid meetings and participate in contract award activities; ensure university representation at all meetings associated with construction activities; oversee project start-up activities.

Develop and maintain appropriate construction administration processes for monitoring multiple large and small campus construction projects; establish office procedures for project start-up, job cost reporting, contractor submittal review, project schedule and quality control, and reporting; develop and maintain university construction procedures manual.

Monitor the field construction and review for general compliance with drawings and specifications; ensure Facilities Planning and Management review of critical shop drawings and submittals for compliance with university standards; initiate, coordinate and administer outside inspection and testing services for quality control of construction work as required.

Prepare project correspondence and other documents used in administering contracts and purchase orders; document project progress with written reports, photographs, and schedules as required; coordinate the university approval/rejection of work; issue Stop Work orders to contractors as necessary; in the event of project changes, problems, or claims, take appropriate actions to resolve matters and to make recommendations to the Directors of Facilities Planning and Engineering for project budget changes, change orders, and claims resolution.
