Job Summary:

Health Physicists play a key role in support and implementation of procedures and processes for the UW-Madison Radiation Safety Program which oversees both campus and clinical areas at UW Health facilities.

The Health Physicist will perform audits of research areas and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and department policies. They will interpret and implement federal, state, and local standards, rules, regulations, and guidance concerning radiological health and safety issues. They will conduct exposure and contamination surveys, sealed source inventory and leak tests, inventories of radioactive material and radiation-producing machines, decontamination and release or decommissioning, and effluent and environmental monitoring.

Bachelor's Degree


- Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiological health, medical physics, radiological engineering, or related field
- At least two years of relevant experience

- Knowledge of the concepts, fundamentals, and best practices of health physics and radiation protection as well as the risks associated with ionizing radiation exposure.
- Practical experience in the safe use and regulation of radioactive material at a research institution.
- Knowledge of (and experience interpreting) the state and federal regulations, standards, and guidance documents governing radioactive materials, radiation producing machines, and other hazards typically present in a research setting.
- Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication, including written and in-person training/instruction/presentations and communicating technical information clearly and concisely.
- Self-motivated, ability to work with supervision and professional judgment, managing the radiation safety program within an assigned functional area, and ability to work independently or as a team.
- Detail-oriented, demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and ability to manage/prioritize, track, and complete tasks/projects within established deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and able to interact professionally and effectively with wide variety of individuals (researchers, staff, students, administrators, and regulators), behaving in accordance with institutional values.
- Experience demonstrating critical thinking and analytical skills in high stress or emergency situations.
- HAZWOPER training.

- Able to wear radiation dosimetry, submit bioassays (as required), wear personal protective equipment, and work with radioactive, hazardous, and/or infectious materials or in areas where they are used or stored.
- Able to periodically perform lifting of up to 40 lbs.
- Able to move throughout facilities including stairs, have control and dexterity to survey areas that may not be easily accessible, and endurance to spend time moving through labs and campus during inspections, audits, and emergency response.
- If required to work in or around research facilities in which animals are used or may be present, enrollment in medical surveillance program for animal contact risk.
- If required to work in an emergency response capability, enrollment in respiratory protection program with medical clearance.
