Job Summary:

The Department of Physics has a new opportunity for an associate director of the MS in Physics - Quantum Computing (MSPQC) program and the Wisconsin Quantum Institute (WQI). MSPQC is an accelerated professional master's program housed in the Department of Physics. It is the first program of its kind in the U.S., enrolling twenty-nine new students this fall in the program's fourth cohort and preparing them for careers in the rapidly growing field of quantum computing. WQI is an interdepartmental initiative that brings together quantum research activities across campus, working to solve problems and advance our understanding of the physical world using the methods of quantum science and technology.

We are looking for someone with formal training in physics or a related field who is ready to move into this exciting new leadership role. This position provides guidance and managerial responsibility for both MSPQC and WQI, working closely with the faculty directors to define and execute strategic priorities. This position will: translate strategic priorities into project objectives, develop and maintain productive relationships with prospective employers, ensure that high educational standards are maintained, coordinate academic program assessment, supervise personnel and guide purchasing decisions including the acquisition of equipment for the quantum computing instructional laboratory, assist in the preparation of grant proposals for external funding, coordinate quantum research activities across campus, and manage day-to-day administration and resource allocation.

Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and managerial responsibility for one or more academic program(s), ensuring alignment with the university mission. Directs administrative oversight and academic curriculum development, ensuring optimal integration of student and faculty activities. Ensures resource allocation supports the program's primary objectives. Manages a team of professionals who support the program(s).
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 15% Collaborates with faculty members to develop student academic programs and agendas, directs implementation, and creates curricular structure including operational and logistical arrangements
  • 15% Formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, develops policies and procedures, and establishes and maintains new and emerging program materials
  • 10% Evaluates operations and outcomes to ensure alignment with organizational goals
  • 10% Serves as the principal liaison between the program, University leadership, and outside entities
  • 5% May provide guidance to faculty regarding funding, staffing, and space implications
  • 5% Develops the unit budget and approves unit expenditures
  • 10% Manages student academic program(s)
  • 5% Preparation of Wisconsin Quantum Institute (WQI) annual reports for presentation to stakeholders and use in fundraising.
  • 5% Development of connections to national quantum programs including NSF and DOE quantum centers, the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QEDC), and the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE).
  • 10% Organization of workshops and administration of quantum visitor programs, monitoring and reporting of research and education outcomes, and development of our web presence.

Education:

Required
Master's Degree in physics or closely related field

Preferred
Ph.D. in physics or closely related field

Qualifications:

Minimum of one year post degree working experience.
Demonstrated experience with academic programs or other program management.
Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
