Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Population Health Institute (UWPHI) works to accelerate capacity to create equitable conditions for everyone to be healthy by advancing knowledge, practice, policy, and systems change across sectors. This position will assist with research, evaluation, and dissemination activities that help advance a Population Health and Equity Research Agenda (PHERA) within UWPHI. Responsibilities for this position include literature review and synthesis on topics related to population health and equity; data collection, management, and analysis; assistance with producing research articles, evaluation reports, and practice-oriented dissemination products; engaging stakeholders and facilitating processes to support the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of public health and human services programs; and administrative tasks to support research, evaluation, and dissemination products.

Responsibilities:

Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty.
  • 25% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
  • 25% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
  • 5% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
  • 15% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 10% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership
  • 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 15% Participation in/facilitation of stakeholder meetings such as community of practices, evaluation meetings, and grant-required trainings

Education:

Required
Master's Degree in population health, public health, sociology, social work, human ecology, or related field

Qualifications:

Required:
- Master's Degree in population health, public health, sociology, social work, human ecology, or related field
- Interest in and familiarity with the concepts of health equity, including: root causes and factors underlying health outcomes; multisector approaches to community health improvement; and strategies to promote civic engagement, inclusion, belonging, and community power building
- Experience conducting social science or public health research and/or program evaluation
- Ability to synthesize and analyze relevant public health/social science literature and qualitative data
- Strong organizational, communication, and writing skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software package including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of document sharing services such as Box and Google Drive
- Ability to work independently and remotely, and to engage with colleagues via video conferencing software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams
- Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with diverse co-workers, community members, customers, etc.

Preferred:
- Experience conducting data analysis, including using qualitative coding protocols and software
- Experience with common quantitative and qualitative evaluation designs and methodologies including case studies, observational and longitudinal design, surveys, interviews, and evaluation with populations that have been historically excluded or marginalized
- Knowledge of data management, data entry, data cleaning techniques, and basic descriptive and inferential analysis utilizing software such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA, and database and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel. This includes the ability to assess uses, limitations, and quality of different types of data.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and accomplish work, manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines, with a high level of motivation.
- Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and to practicing values of equity and inclusion
