Interim Lower School Science Teacher Department: Lower School Location: Bethesda, MD
Position Start Date: January 2022
Status: Temporary Full-Time
Sidwell Friends, a co-educational Quaker day school, seeks a full-time Interim Lower School Science Teacher (1st-4th grades) for the winter/spring terms (January 2022-June 2022).
The science program is hands-on and experiential, and is grounded in our Quaker testimonies of stewardship, community and justice. Students dive into an array of scientific concepts, including engineering, physical science, life science and earth & space science. Students are challenged to think deeply about these ideas, make learning personal and relevant and incorporate the values of stewardship and sustainability into their daily lives.
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, pay attention to the whole child, and ground their practices in a commitment to equity, justice and community. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, organizational skills and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.
This position is covering a half year sabbatical leave between January and June of the 21-22 school year, and the teacher is responsible for the 1st-4th grade science program. In addition, all faculty members are expected to support the lower school community by participating in regular duties, including recesses, lunches and carpool, as well as attending weekly staff meetings.
A Bachelors degree in elementary education or science is preferred. Masters is encouraged.
As a condition of employment, all employees hired after August 1, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and able to provide proof of such vaccination. To make application for a medical or religious exemption, please contact the human resources department.
