UW Bothell has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor.

This full-time position supports students and faculty in the School of Educational Studies within the Undergraduate Degree programs. Program pathways include: the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies, the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies – Elementary Education Teacher Certification Option, K-8 Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification, Secondary Teacher Certification Post Baccalaureate, and three minors. The primary purpose of the position is to provide pre-admissions advising and academic advising on a daily basis. The position also provides support to program functions related to recruitment, admissions, and retention of current Educational Studies students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advising:

• Advise current and prospective Educational Studies students in person, via phone, and online video conference. Communicate degree/program requirements, University and School policies and procedures, pre-enrollment preparation, and academic and career planning. Respond promptly to email and phone queries and requests for in-person appointments.
• Counsel students who are experiencing academic challenges, make referrals to faculty and campus resources as appropriate.
• Maintain confidential student files, including appropriate documentation for accreditation or teacher certification purposes, as needed.
• Track student progress through degree programs using UW systems (Navigate, EARS) and communicate with students regarding program completion, applying for graduation, and performing degree audits.
• Prepare or review and sign/submit documentation such as Change of Major forms, graduation applications, petitions related to degree or teacher certification, etc.
• Coordinate and lead transfer and first-year orientation advising sessions throughout the year.
• Coordinate and lead teacher certification program orientations with appropriate faculty and staff.
• Audit prospective teacher certification students' transcripts for courses fulfilling pre-admission requirements.
• Manage course petition and review process with appropriate faculty.
• Advise students on requirements for Washington state teacher certification and submit teacher certification recommendations to the state.
• Participate in and prepare faculty for guidance and support team meetings with teacher certification students as necessary.
• Anticipate and prepare for the effects on students of program changes. Advise the faculty about University and Campus rules and requirements that affect students. Work with faculty and staff to operationalize state-mandated changes to teacher certification programs.
• Evaluate and modify program processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness in promoting student progress.
• Create and contribute to reference materials for student use in print or online, including Canvas Resource Hubs and web documentation of program policies.
• Participate in the professional academic advising community; maintain strong relationships with and act as a resource for campus partners.

Recruitment and Admissions:

• Work with School Academic Services team to develop recruitment and retention strategies for students from underrepresented groups.
• Present information sessions on Educational Studies programs to small and large audiences.
• Participate in teacher pipeline initiatives, including event planning related to these initiatives.
• Utilize Canvas and other online platforms to communicate with students.
• Assist the Academic Services team with the application and admissions processes for School programs.
• Assist the Academic Services team with developing and/or implementing recommendations for improving School application and admissions processes.

Department Support:

• Attend regular University and School staff and committees, work groups, and major planning meetings, as needed.
• Communicate pertinent information, updates, and opportunities to undergraduates.
• Develop and update relevant promotional materials for the program including fliers, handouts, website updating, and student/applicant profile information
• Evaluate and respond to student feedback regarding student support resources provided by the School.
• Support assessment efforts of undergraduate student majors and programs.
• Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Student Development Administration, Policies Studies, or related field.
• At least three years of academic advising experience in higher education

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and in a team environment.
• Strong organizational, administrative, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google platforms

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

• Previous work experience in K-12 schools or other professional certification programs.
• Familiarity with SDB, EARS, Navigate, and other UW systems.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Dynamic office environment. Regular and frequent one-on-one advising appointments with general public and university students, especially from diverse backgrounds. Attendance at infrequent events outside of regular business hours and off campus. Occasional travel throughout region for recruiting at schools and district offices, attendance at conferences, recruitment fairs, etc.
