The Assistant Director of Transfer and Transition Services, reporting to the Director of Academic Advising and has a dotted line to the Director of Career Advising, plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. The position provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of academic advisors in a manner that supports and complements A&S/Maxwell’s advising model. This position also works collaboratively with the Director of Operations and Director of Career Advising to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carry out the vision for the department, and work synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty and academic leaders of the University’s educational programs, and the University in its entirety.

This role requires a professional leader with expertise in advising undergraduate students who are either exploring major options or who have already declared a major. It also requires collaboration with the advising team, faculty, and departments to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees. Qualifications
Master’s degree and experience in a high-level support or a management role in higher education desired. Minimum of four years of experience in academic or career advising preferred. Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self-studies, academic advising, working with individuals under time and multitasking pressures. Experience with transfer credit, articulations, and degree auditing required. Job Specific Qualifications
Maintain knowledge of all academic advising and career counseling functions of the school and of allied offices to effectively advise students, faculty, faculty advisors and other defined stakeholders.

Expert level knowledge in transfer processes and equivalencies required.

Career exploration and counseling experience is required in addition to academic advising experience.
Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations is necessary, as are excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.

Ability to relate well to students, parents, scholars, faculty, staff and others from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Quality community building and collaboration skills.

Strong sense of ethics.

Passion for student development through cutting-edge national practices.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to create and maintain efficient systems and processes.

Ability to use expert judgement in the managing of escalated cases.

Ability to proactively identify potential problems and lead to mitigate those problems or student situations for your reports.

Proficiency in Degree Works, PeopleSoft, Hyperion, Microsoft Office, knowledge of University policies and procedures is desired. Responsibilities
Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for incoming and first semester transfer students. Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation. Support advising teams in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University’s prescribed software. Manage escalated student cases that arise in conjunction with appropriate Director.

Under the direction of the CAS /Maxwell Director of Academic Advising and the Director of Career Advising, the Assistant Director will evaluate all external transfer credit for CAS / MAX students, both new and continuing. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the University Registrar on the build out and maintaining of a transfer credit database. The Assistant Director will be responsible for posting all earned transfer credit to student records. The Assistant Director will provide direction for campus academic and career advising policies and procedures, in collaboration with the colleges and schools, the Registrar, and enrollment management. Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff and parents in matters related to advising.

Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in departments as well as schools and colleges within Syracuse University to maintain accurate and up to date transfer equivalencies. Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals. Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University. Attend and participate in division, department and university-wide meetings and represent A&S|Maxwell Office of Academic and Career Advising as needed.

Work directly with office of Admissions on all transfer articulation programs. Work with Admissions on transfer student events.

Identify in person and/or through faculty interaction and/or through Orange Success, at-risk students and provide support, guidance and referral to academic departments, faculty, support services (Center for Learning and Student Success, college tutoring options, writing center, math clinic, etc.), crisis intervention (Office of Student Assistance), personal counseling and therapy (Counseling Center), financial aid, residence life, and other University resources.
