Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work ( SSW ) is seeking multiple individuals for the position of Student Success Advisor. This position will work closely with the Director of Advising & Retention, program directors, faculty and staff to foster an increasing sense of responsibility and empowerment for students as they progress towards successful completion of their program. This position will provide advising and support to current social work students throughout their development as social work professionals; assist with orientations and admissions outreach activities, and promote student engagement.

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Education, Guidance, Counseling or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, flexibility, and empathy when interacting with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Working knowledge of social work education, student development and learning theory, FERPA .
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Detail-oriented event coordination.
  • Networking and relationship building with community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability in working with, interpreting, communicating, and implementing complex policies and procedures.
  • Evidence of working independently and exercising initiative.
  • Ability to thrive in high-paced, high-volume environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer software including Word, Power Point, Excel, Canvas, and various communication technologies including Google Apps, Zoom, Skype and social media.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate non-traditional students by offering evening and weekend appointments will be required.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse population of faculty, students, staff and community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Experience in college admissions, academic advising, academic and/or student affairs preferred.
