Position Summary

The UB Teacher Residency program is a one-year, paid residency program designed for those interested in pursuing initial and/or initial/professional certification in childhood, early childhood, English for speakers of other languages, or adolescence education. Each cohort officially launches at a Teacher Residency Summer Institute, where residents, mentor teachers, and school leaders come together with university faculty to engage with a range of relevant topics including co-teaching, evidence-based instructional practices, literacy, and other district initiatives. During the residency year, Resident Teachers will complete rigorous coursework while co-teaching alongside a Buffalo Public School Mentor Teacher. The cohort completes the final coursework during the summer following their co-teaching experience. Upon successful completion, residents will become the teacher-of-record in a Buffalo Public School, receiving additional follow-on support through our UB Teacher Residency Consortium, a network that includes both online and face-to-face components intended to support early career teachers.

UBTR Teacher Education Associates have three primary roles:
  • Supporting School Partnerships
  • Serving as Expert Teacher Leaders
  • Engaging in Administrative Tasks to Support Program Goals

School Partnerships
TEAs are the face of UB, GSE, TEI, and UBTR with our residency school sites. Within their purview, TEAs connect with the schools and the communities in which they are located to cultivate a rapport that is mutually beneficial to both the residency school site and the University at Buffalo.
  • Meet with mentor teachers and principals to discuss mutually agreed upon goals and expectations for students each semester
  • Meet with Mentor Teachers (MT) and Resident Teachers (RT) at the Teacher Residency Summer Institute ( TRSI ) to discuss procedures and protocols for MT, Resident Teacher, and TEA
  • Maintain regular communications with MTs and administrators to monitor progress of residents
  • Attend meetings to discuss issues that may involve one or more residents and explore ways of managing a situation
  • Engage in individual activity that fosters community within the cohort and strengthens our relationships with the schools.
Expert Teacher Leaders
UBTR TEAs facilitate the activation of much of the theory from coursework into practical applications as students progress through field experience and student teaching. They accomplish this through the preparation and implementation of effective curriculum for small cohorts of resident teachers during their residency experiences in the teacher education program.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of cohort-level curriculum for Field Experience ( LAI 667) and Seminar in Teaching ( LAI 674)
  • Mentor and provide support for up to 8 students throughout the residency year (consistent with the BPS calendar)
  • Model and promote Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Initiatives
  • Observe each resident teacher at regular intervals throughout the residency year and while the resident has assumed various roles in the classroom
  • Provide systematic, data-based assessments throughout residency (including all signature assessments required by TEI )
  • Provide support, as needed, for Mentor Teachers engaged in instructional mentoring/coaching of Resident Teachers
  • Engage and facilitate discussions in an online professional learning community for Mentor Teachers and Resident Teachers (UB Teacher Residency Consortium)
  • Guide students through their Reflective Inquiry Project
  • Support (mentor) residents who are in need especially when outside issues are interfering with residency-related responsibilities
  • Model evidence-based practices
  • Promote the professional dispositions required of teachers
Administrative Duties
In addition to the aforementioned roles, UBTR TEAs assist with administrative tasks within the TEI and UBTR program.

These may include:
  • Interviewing potential candidates for UBTR program
  • Attending monthly meetings with the UBTR and/or TEI staff
  • Oversee the submission of collaborative logs
  • Assist with the accreditation of UB as an Educator Preparation Provider
  • Write recommendation letters for students for future employment
  • Participate in the certification ceremony
  • Work with ad hoc task groups as needed and interested
  • Complete other tasks at the request of the director
