Assists with the maintenance and preparation of tax records, tax returns, reports and other tax related information while providing tax compliance for the University and Foreign National community.

  1. Audits and processes purchase and service vouchers, moving relocation reimbursements, travel reimbursements, scholarship and royalty payments within PeopleSoft and Concur Travel Management Systems.
  2. Analyzes and researches tax issues. Implements new IRS rules and regulations pertaining to Nonresident Alien taxation and other tax compliance issues as necessary.
  3. Identifies, calculates and submits taxable fringe benefits (moving expense reimbursements, club memberships and other taxable benefits) to Payroll Department according to University, State of Texas and Federal tax rules and regulations.
  4. Prepares a variety of tax forms that include, but are not limited to, 990-EZ, 990-T, 8300, 8802, 1042, 1042-S, 1098-T, for proper tax reporting in accordance with IRS Regulations.
  5. Monitors and submits Form 1042 tax liability deposit, which includes Nonqualified Scholarship reports for each campus, to IRS by determinable deadline.
  6. Ensures income tax compliance and evaluates tax treaty exemption for Nonresident Alien employees, students, royalties and independent contractors.
  7. Provides customer service (via email, phone or in person) for students and UH departments concerning tax treaty exemptions and other tax issues. Creates and provides training for UH departments as necessary.
  8. Coordinates the annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for international students.
  9. Maintains and updates tax file documents, which include, but are not limited to, records retention files, tax subscriptions, and tax file cabinets inventory.
  10. Updates and enhances content on the Tax Department's website. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Bachelors and 1 to 3 years experience.

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

Requires a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

Note: This is a broadband requisition; the department will be hiring for Accountant I, 2 or 3 from this requisition. Selected applications interviewed, the hiring manager will determine based on experience, position availability and the outcome of the interview of what level the Accountant candidate will be hired.
