The Center for Biomolecular Structure & Dynamics (CBSD) invites applications for a Budget Analyst I . This position is responsible for providing financial services to CBSD, and will be expected to carry out routine duties with a high degree of independence and minimum supervision. The Budget Analyst I must be resourceful and will be required to keep apprised of specific grant and sponsor regulations. This position may supervise student employees or work/study students as needed. This position cooperates with other University units that are allocated funds though the CBSD NIH CoBRE award or other sources of CBSD funding and effectively coordinates with collaborators.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide grant proposal assistance for faculty submitting grant proposals through CBSD.
  • Responsible for grant and budget management including coordinating and verifying purchasing, allocating payroll costs, reconciling accounts, executing cost transfers, and other routine transactions.
  • Responsible for monitoring spending on restricted projects and forecasting costs to determine feasibility of project initiatives.
  • Provide routine financial updates and work directly with project managers to monitor spending and plan for costs throughout the project period to best support the research endeavor.
  • Responsible for preparing letter of appointment contracts, graduate contracts, and faculty/staff pay instructions based upon project needs and coordinated with employee’s academic department.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships and act as a liaison for, and positively represent, the CBSD through effective interaction with the public, the sponsored programs office, academic departments, campus administrators, faculty, staff and students.


Post-training, the incumbent will be expected to learn and become proficient in all University software systems required for this position's work, including Grizmart, Cayuse, Uapprove, Banner, and UMDW. Incumbent is responsible for learning sponsor requirements, consulting with faculty applicant and developing multi-year budgets consistent with restricted project constraints, and submitting financial documents within internal and external web-based software platforms.

Minimum Required Experience
  • High school degree or equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience working in a professional office for the private or public sector


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Accounting or a related field
  • Experience in pre-award and/or post-award financial grant management
  • Experience in job-costing or tracking project specific costs
  • Experience in developing and maintaining excel workbooks to track actual costs and expense projections to budget
  • Experience in governmental or non-profit accounting
  • Software experience in Banner, Grizmart, Uapprove, and/or QuickBooks Pro

The mission of the Center is to support collaborative research among faculty investigators that employs the principles of physics, chemistry and structural biology to address significant problems in biology and medicine by:

  • Seeking extramural research center support to support promising investigators and research projects
  • Financial support of core instrument facilities and expertise
  • Support of students and programmatic activities of the Molecular Biosciences Umbrella Graduate Program

Position Details

Position Title: Budget Analyst I

Position Number: 292160

Department: Center for Biomolecular Structures & Dynamics

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $17.87/hr - Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum months
