Executive Vice President and Provost
University of Nevada, Reno

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), a distinguished, dynamic, historic top-tier public research (R1) and teaching land-grant university located at the base of the majestic Sierra mountains and near Lake Tahoe, seeks an energetic, experienced academic administrator to serve as Executive Vice President and Provost. The University has 17,000 undergraduate students and 3,300 graduate students and $160 million in research expenditures.

This position serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the University, and reports to and works in close partnership with the President. The successful candidate for this position has an outstanding opportunity to forge and execute a comprehensive vision to inspire and lead this institution into an exciting new era.

As Chief Academic Officer, the Executive Vice President and Provost oversees 13 colleges and schools containing 40 academic departments:

Direct reports include Academic Deans; Senior Vice Provost; Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs; Vice Provost, Graduate Education; Vice Provost, Undergraduate Education; Vice Provost, On-line Learning; Director, University Press; and Director, Guinn Center for Policy Priorities.

Required Qualifications
At a minimum, the Executive Vice President and Provost will have the following qualifications:

  • A terminal degree and a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching requisite for an appointment as a tenured full professor.
  • A record of significant and progressive academic leadership experience appropriate to this role at the level equivalent of Dean or above.
  • Substantial administrative experience with academic budgeting and financial planning.
  • Proven experience in recruiting, developing, retaining, and evaluating faculty and professional staff.
  • An established record of embracing, developing, and supporting a diverse staff, faculty, and campus population; demonstrated commitment to diversity in areas of hiring, promotions, student enrollment, and retention.
  • A successful record of developing, implementing, and sustaining innovative policies and programs that foster excellence in teaching, research, and service in higher education.
  • Experience relating to external constituencies, such as governing and coordinating boards, legislative bodies, public agencies, funding agencies, alumni, and donors.
