The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University invites applications for one or more full-time, multi-year Preceptors in Chinese expected to begin July 1, 2022.  The Preceptor will be responsible for teaching 2-3 Chinese courses per year, meeting with students for regular office hours, and coordinating a teaching team for their level’s discussion sections. This is a term appointment of three years, renewable for a term of up to five years (eight years in total), contingent on performance, enrollments, curricular need, position availability, and divisional dean authorization

The successful applicant should be well versed in the issues of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, have experience in teaching multiple levels of Chinese, must have exemplary ability in comprehension and active use of standard Chinese and English, written and spoken, at native or near-native proficiency and must be able to teach multiple levels of modern Chinese.

Several years of experience teaching modern Chinese at the college level in the United States and specialization in Chinese pedagogy and second language acquisition is highly desirable.  An M.A. degree or higher in Chinese Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, or a closely related field is preferred; experience in computer-assisted language teaching is a plus.

Interested candidates should submit, to the application portal at https://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/10521:

  1. Cover letter, including a description of teaching/advising experience and philosophy and comments on any efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Names and contact information of three to five referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.

Candidates should also send a 20-minute teaching demo by URL through the ARIeS portal, or send a USB of the applicant teaching to:
