The Head of Animated Arts

About the Animated Arts Program:

Our program encourages students to explore, combining fine art practices with principles of traditional animated motion. At a time when the boundaries between live action, animation, painting, photography, illustration and design are dissolving, our interdisciplinary approach encourages you to reimagine ways to create frame-by-frame work for multiple contexts. In addition to learning traditional principles of timing and pacing, students experiment with a variety of media, production methods, and narrative strategies as they produce work for varied platforms. We present a diverse range of animation in the context of a broad engagement with cinema, art, society and culture. Students engage in research to probe and hone their ideas in a setting that values innovative thinking, risk taking, collaboration, and fine craftsmanship. Our students pursue diverse post graduate outcomes from working in Portland's robust animation industry to independent mediamaker to gaining entry into top-tier MFA programs.

About the Video & Sound Program:

Moving images and sound make up the basic components of communication and self-expression in the 21st century. From big budget Hollywood productions to homemade online videos, our culture is immersed in a media atmosphere. The Video + Sound concentration within the Media Arts major promotes an expansive investigation of video and sound as disciplines both distinct and allied. Cultivating a practice-based media literacy, this program supports the acquisition of critical, aesthetic, and technical skills, which are vital to cultural production. Video + Sound students draw on the rich histories and interconnections between video art, sound art, experimental film, installation, performance, and network culture.

PNCA recognizes that diverse classrooms and workplaces offer the richest learning opportunities and is committed to a policy of equality in our admission and employment practices.
