The Clinical Practice Association Training Department seeks aPrincipal Trainer, which is an Enterprise-level position and is responsible for developing and maintaining course curricula and supporting training materials. Principal Trainers work collaboratively with other members of the project team to develop the training program. This individual is certified in selected Epic applications and is responsible for:

  • Outlining, managing, and executing project tasks related to implementation and support within established scope, timelines, and within budget
  • Establishing working relationships with analysts, management, subject matter experts, trainers, and end users
  • Leading training implementation and support projects within the constraints of time, budget, and scope
  • Understanding and interpreting clinical and non-clinical workflows, processes, and terminology in order to translate information into educationally sound training content
  • Interfaces with instructional designer and e-learning developers to design and test e-learning
  • Formulating training system scope and objectives for identified application/programs requiring build and development
  • Overseeing the development, testing, and maintenance of the training environment
  • Maintaining policy and procedure documentation related to training
  • Diagnosing complex application issues and recommending remedial actions to correct problems using comprehensive application knowledge
  • Reviewing new application enhancements/upgrades and assisting in development of implementation plans

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Training

  • Identifies initial and ongoing training needs ofend­users using a variety of teaching strategies and principles of adultlearning.
  • Designs and develops written curricula/lesson plans that include learning objectives(e.g.,cognitive, affective, and psychomotor), content, methodologies and evaluation measures) for role-based training programs to support clinical or business operations practice.
  • Considers legal, ethical, regulatory, professional standards, multi- generational and multi-cultural needs in all phases of the educational process.
  • Applies principles of adult learning in all phases of the educational process.
  • Designs and delivers training programs, using a variety of teaching strategies (e.g. on-line training, simulation, blended learning, and other emerging educational technologies.
  • Incorporates clinical/business operations concepts as applied to information systems to make content relevant for learners needs. Oversees and serves as subject matter expert for development of e­ learning modules.
  • Deploys instructional methods based on type of learning, learner needs/preferences, and available resources. Plans prepares and maintains training materials for use by both trainers and end-users. Trains other trainers. Demonstrates effective presentation skills.
  • In collaboration with enterprise and local training teams, facilitates continuing competence of end users in use and quality oversight of clinical/business operations applications.
  • Creates and promotes an environment conducive to learning, emphasizing emotional intelligence, tolerance, and respect for others.
  • Trains or supervises the training of newly hired trainers as part of their orientation.
  • Maintains documentation of orientation and ongoing training needs.
  • Works with other members of the project team to develop criteria for competency testing.
  • Coordinates competency testing of trainers. Coordinates training of trainers for new releases and system enhancements. Uses metrics and results of educational offerings to determine if change produced by training was sustained.
  • Coordinates training logistics in collaboration with the other members of the project team and clinical/business operations department managers. Participates in developing, testing, and maintaining a strong training environment. Oversees development of appropriate training scenarios and master patients for the training environment.

Leadership

    Consults and collaborates with enterprise committees in identifying curriculum, quality of training programs, and methods of instruction and delivery. Provides leadership to promote effective training and education of end users. Collaborates across the enterprise, articulates ideas, and negotiates resolution of issues to achieve objectives. serves as a content expert and resource to others from within and outside the enterprise. Exhibits a strong customer service­ oriented focus in all decisions and actions. Exhibits professional aspect and attitude at all times. Works equally well independently and as a member of a high­ functioning team. Effectively and consistently communicates with all members of the training teams and clinical/business operations customers. Presents ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in written format. Demonstrates self-awareness, conflict management, and active listening. Keeps appropriate people informed of relevant training issues. Provides coaching to training staff and assists with program development. Provides guidance and feedback to training staff relating to course development anddesign.

    Integrates continual performance improvement into the structure and processes of the training program for assigned application(s). Uses the performance improvement model of systematic data-driven decision-making as a guide for all appropriate training activities. Demonstrates commitment to continually improve work processes relating to training. Creates innovative strategies to improve efficiency and/or outcomes in work standards. Aligns all training activities with organizational performance improvement goals. Coordinates ongoing training program evaluation including user competency and training system reliability. Evaluates and sets priorities for training performance improvement opportunities, considering resources required and benefits to be achieved.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in education or health related field with education related coursework.

  • Three years experience in adult education/training.

  • Five years experience in finance/operations in a health care environment preferred.

Professional certification(s) and/or related experience beyond minimum training experience qualifications may substitute for formal education requirement to the extent permitted by JHU equivalency formula. Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Certifications:

    Required to complete and pass certification in assigned EPIC application module(s) within 120 days of employment in this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Experience in adult education/training in the healthcare industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of the current healthcare environment preferred.
  • End user training experience in EPIC or other clinical/business operations information system preferred.
  • Experience in developing business and/or clinical workflows related to the assigned application module.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and application of adult learning principles
  • Ability to incorporate policies, procedures, and specific clinical practice and/or business processing needs into information systems training
  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Detailed understanding of clinical/business operations workflows and system configuration gained by participating in validation sessions with project team members and assisting in system design.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel,PowerPoint,with proficiency in Microsoft Visio and Project desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in technical instructional design techniques for instructor-led, computer-based, and individual on-the-job learning and related software applications.
  • Utilizes strong analytical skills to problem solve system configuration issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Able to communicate using the spoken and written word.
  • Able to see within normal parameters and to hear within normal range.
  • Able to move about.
  • Able to lift minimum weight, 10 lbs.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
