The Graduate School of Education at the University of California – Riverside (UCR) is searching for a post-doctoral researcher to start January 2022 in the areas of education, youth civic engagement, and political science to work under the supervision of Professor Joseph Kahne and in collaboration with Dr. Erica Hodgin, Professor Kevin Esterling, and project partners at the Ohio State University and Brown University. The post-doctoral position will be part of an IES funded project called the Connecting Classrooms to Congress project, which will develop and test a social studies curriculum module that enables high school students to study a pressing issue - one that policymakers at the national level are grappling with - and then discuss that issue with their sitting member of Congress through an online deliberative town hall.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or EdD in education or a relevant field as well as the potential for or demonstrated ability to conduct qualitative research linked to the project intervention which may focus on areas such as K-12 social science, youth civic learning, political socialization, deliberative democracy, dialogue across political differences, and curriculum implementation. In addition to supporting the implementation of a sizable randomized control trial and the administration of a complex grant, this post-doc position will enable the individual to be part of cutting edge research tied to the fields of civic education and deliberative democracy.

Candidates with experience and expertise teaching high school, working in public schools, delivering professional development, engaging in diverse school and community contexts, and advancing equitable educational practices are highly desired. We also seek candidates who can demonstrate an ability to work within and contribute to a diverse campus environment. The initial appointment will be for one year to 18 months.
