Job Description

An experienced K-12 teacher to support the implementation of K-12 civic education initiatives in the Center for Political Thought and Leadership, within the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at ASU. Under general guidance, the Program Director oversees implementation of the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap for excellence in K-12 civic and history education, and other civic education projects of the Center and School, by working with Arizona school districts, teachers, and students.

 

Salary Range

$80,000 - $90,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Provide essential support for the major K-12 civic education initiatives of the Center for Political Thought and Leadership within the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, including the Educating for American Democracy project and other ongoing initiatives, by:

  • Collaborating with Center faculty and fellows on the evaluation and construction of curricular materials
  • Supporting various teacher education programs and events associated with our new MA degree as well as our Civic Classics Collection in the ASU Library
  • Interfacing with the Arizona Department of Education as needed, particularly through participation in the Civic Education and Community Engagement (CE2) Committee
  • Liaising with Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College to ensure collaboration where desirable and coordinate relevant activity
  • Leading educational outreach efforts with local and regional K-12 schools on topics of civic education
  • Maintaining communication and collaborative relationships with other ASU units and organizations involved in the civic education/engagement space, particularly locally
  • Coordinating with and supporting the Joe Foss Civics Initiative Program within the CPTL.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. History, Government, and related content pertaining to the teaching of civics in K-12 school environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of administrative principles and practices pertaining to K-12 and higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of teacher, teacher-leader, and administrator professional development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology applications in K-12 and university settings.
  • Experience in in organizational management and prioritizing for effective and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Experience in program design and development.
  • Experience in effective mentoring and coaching adult learners in use of data to improve instructions.
  • Experience in advocating for student achievement, teacher quality, effective professional development, shared leadership, and education reform.
  • Experience in demonstrating leadership style that aligns with teacher and leadership professional development.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with various groups in multiple education settings.

 

Working Environment

  • Most activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
