The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at
Harvard invites applications for a Director of the Vietnamese

at the rank of Senior Preceptor, a five-year appointment that is
fully renewable, contingent upon review and approval of the
divisional dean. The appointment is expected to begin July 1,
2022.
The primary duty of the Director of the Vietnamese Language will be
to teach a creative and well-sequenced curriculum covering all

as a member of the Department’s Language Program Committee.
Basic Qualifications:
Candidates should have experience in teaching and administering modern standard Vietnamese, and have native or near-native ability in the production and comprehension of spoken and written modern standard Vietnamese and English.
Additional Qualifications:
Completion of doctoral-level work in language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related field is preferred. Other qualifications for the position include substantial language teaching experience in Vietnamese language programs and expertise in innovative curriculum development. Experience in the use of digital resources and technology in language instruction and evidence of scholarly work in language teaching, linguistics, or comparative culture are also highly desirable.
Special Instructions:
Candidates should submit: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy and experience; 4) two representative syllabi (one for elementary Vietnamese, another for advanced); 5) recent teaching evaluations; 6) a 15-minute teaching demo video, along with the lesson plan for it (the demo video should be uploaded to a video-sharing site and the link sent to chaireal@fas.harvard.edu); and 7) the names and emails of 3 references. The application will be considered complete only when all three recommendations have been received by the department.
To ensure full consideration, applications should be submitted
online by October 18, 2021.
