The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at
Harvard invites applications for a Director of the Vietnamese
Language Program. The successful candidate will be appointed
at the rank of Senior Preceptor, a five-year appointment that is
fully renewable, contingent upon review and approval of the
divisional dean. The appointment is expected to begin July 1,
The primary duty of the Director of the Vietnamese Language will be
to teach a creative and well-sequenced curriculum covering all
levels of modern standard Vietnamese. The Director will also serve
as a member of the Department’s Language Program Committee.
Candidates should have experience in teaching and administering
modern standard Vietnamese, and have native or near-native ability
in the production and comprehension of spoken and written modern
standard Vietnamese and English.
Completion of doctoral-level work in language pedagogy, applied
linguistics, or a related field is preferred. Other qualifications
for the position include substantial language teaching experience
in Vietnamese language programs and expertise in innovative
curriculum development. Experience in the use of digital resources
and technology in language instruction and evidence of scholarly
work in language teaching, linguistics, or comparative culture are
also highly desirable.

representative syllabi (one for elementary Vietnamese, another for
