Job Summary

The Basic Needs Coordinator - CalFresh position coordinates CalFresh application support and assists with other campus basic needs initiatives related to SJSU Cares and Case Management in the department of Student Services. Reporting to the Senior Student Affairs Case Manager, the Basic Needs Coordinator is responsible for promotion, education and delivery of CalFresh (EBT) application assistance to students. Development and assessment of campus CalFresh assistance programs including outreach events and day-to-day assistance. Oversight and collaboration with student interns and student assistants. The incumbent will support several food security program initiatives and facilitate relationships to complete tasks, as well as support for developing and implementing a plan for future related programming. This will require analyzing needs of the students and how best to provide the necessary resources and implementing associated recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the campus point of contact with California Department of Social Services (CDSS), CA county’s individual Social Services, and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley’s CalFresh Assistance programs, and the CSU Chancellor’s Office Basic Needs initiatives relating to CalFresh
  • Provide application assistance, advising, and follow up to students on the CalFresh application process
  • Coordinate student outreach, drop-in hours, workshops, and individual appointments
  • Support all SJSU Cares events such as CalFresh Application Day and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, including program participation in campus wide events
  • Provide oversight to student interns and student assistants assigned to work within related programs as well as training
  • Develop and execute marketing & outreach plan to educate students, staff and faculty about CalFresh and other SJSU Cares resources, to include collaborating with Spartan Eats, Fresh Approach, César Chávez Community Action Center Garden, Student Wellness Center, Peer Health Educators, Nutritional Science and other campus partners to promote CalFresh awareness with students
  • Maintain SJSU Cares’ CalFresh program manual to include best practices, development, implementation and assessment of program
  • Create and maintain CalFresh educational materials for students and the student applicant tracking system
  • Provides customer service at the front counter
  • Provides direct and indirect contact with students, staff, administrators and faculty advisors for problem resolution related to student need
  • Partake in additional departmental programs such as Rapid Rehousing and Spartan Food Pantry

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities


License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in social work, business administration, communication, marketing, nutrition, human services, or a related field. Three years of relevant work experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Two years of work experience in a related professional business office or customer service experience
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as seen on application
  • Experience providing excellent customer service in a high volume, fast paced environment




Compensation

Classification: Health Education Assistant
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,566/month - $4,705/month
Salary Range: $3,704/month - $7,147/month
