Laboratory Services Manager

Pay Range: $55,494 annually or higher depending on experience

Position Summary:
Serves as laboratory services manager and senior scientist at the University of Idaho Analytical Sciences Laboratory. Directs the day-to-day operation of a laboratory conducting analytical chemistry testing on agricultural, veterinary, and environmental samples. Supervises a team of scientists, laboratory technicians, and support personnel. Responsible for training and professional development of staff and compliance with university, state, and federal safety and hazardous waste standards. Responsible for client support and project management, provides technical guidance and quotes for analytical services; manages sample analysis and work-flow scheduling. Oversees quality assurance/quality control, adherence to regulatory guidelines, third-party proficiency testing and certification/accreditation programs. Authorizes and facilitates purchase of laboratory materials and instrumentation. Responsible for cost analysis, development of fee structure, and overall laboratory budget.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Agricultural Chemistry, Biochemistry, Soil Chemistry, or closely related discipline; a bachelor’s degree plus 3 years’ post-degree research experience including at least one year of technical/administrative experience in laboratory or field research site operations may be substituted. • One year of post-master’s research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Agricultural Chemistry, Biochemistry, Soil Chemistry or closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of experience and education; plus at least three (3) years of directly related professional experience.

• Three years of laboratory or field research site management experience including monitoring safety compliance, training personnel, and budgeting and procuring necessary supplies/equipment. • Demonstrated experience in the supervision and management of a team of scientists and laboratory technicians. • Demonstrated experience with budget management, client support and project management. • Demonstrated skills in analytical chemistry including sample preparation methods and advanced instrumentation, quality assurance and quality control. • Demonstrated experience and skills with advanced instrumentation (e.g., ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FIA, TOC, CVAFS, IC, HPLC, LC-MS, GC, GC-MS, combustion analyzers, and flame photometry), experience in using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and knowledge of EPA, AOAC, SMWW, Methods of Soil Analysis, and other standard analytical methods, and AAVLD, ISO 17025, NAPT-PAP, and laboratory accreditation requirements. • Experience with preparation of grant proposals, conducting research projects, and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
