Department: Disability Services For Students

Position Summary:
Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Sign Language Interpreter in the Department of Disability Services for Students.

The candidate would be expected to: provide interpreting services for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in classes, extra curricular activities, sporting events and meetings; assist in coordination of the recruiting and scheduling of interpreters to ensure the quality of interpreting services; determine student eligibility for services such as interpreting and real time captioning; provide assistance to the Director and promote University and community awareness of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing population.

Other Requirements:
Proficiency in American Sign Language, Signed English and oral interpreting with a thorough knowledge of deaf culture. Current Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification, including Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), or state quality assurance. Experience working with people with disabilities.

Knowledge of deafness, services and accommodations, role and functions of interpreters and captionists, and communication methods used by deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Ability to translate, transliterate and interpret spoken and manual communication. Knowledge of evaluation and training procedures for interpreters. Knowledge of current technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Two years professional experience working with deaf and hard of hearing people. Knowledge of state and federal laws applying to nondiscrimination.
