The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College and Conservatory invites applications for a two-year, full-time Administrative and Professional Staff position as Assistant/Associate Director of Conservatory Professional Development beginning in the 2021-22 academic year.   The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college.  Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, composition, electronic and computer music, jazz, music history, and historical performance.  The Conservatory also offers Performance and Artist Diplomas in performance areas, an Artist Diploma in Piano Technology, and a postgraduate program in Recording and Audio Production.  

Reporting to the Director of Conservatory Professional Development, the Assistant/Associate Director of Conservatory Professional Development will provide leadership and support to maintain and strengthen the office’s programming and support for students.    The Conservatory of Music’s Professional Development office is part of the Pedagogy, Advocacy, and Community Engagement (PACE) Division. The office assists Conservatory, double-degree, and Musical Studies students in attaining skills necessary for a diverse and fulfilling career in music by providing resources, individual advising sessions, experiential opportunities, guest workshops, and course offerings.   Responsibilities:  
  • Assist students through individual advising meetings and drop-in hours in the Professional Development Office. 
  • Advising support may include aiding students in identifying internship or summer opportunities, help with graduate school applications, resumes and bios, and broader music career topics;
  • Oversee and administer three internal student grants that include the XARTs Fund, Flint Initiative Grants (FIGs) and the Conservatory Student Success Fund; present info sessions throughout the year; update the website with application and award information; coach students on project conception, grant writing, budgets, and execution; put together faculty panels for application review; create award letters and serve as a point person for the awardees;
  • Serve as the instructor and coordinator for the Music Leadership Career Community: work closely with the Career Development Center staff to review applicants and select student participants; teach a module-length course highlighting arts leadership topics in the industry; coordinate with external organizations to secure internship opportunities; match students to internship opportunities and follow up with their progress, as needed;
  • Serve as the instructor for the virtual Professional Development Speaker Series: help identify potential speakers for the series and coordinate contracts; post events to Oberlin’s events calendar and coordinate with the communications team to advertise; oversee the course, including student registration, grading, presentation of guest speakers and facilitation of discussion with students and guests;
  • Coordinate visiting guest speaker engagements throughout the year; promote and attend events;
  • Oversee and Manage Oberlin’s Gig Referral Service and Private Lesson Referral Service: present Info/Orientation Sessions once per semester; train Gig Referral Coordinator student worker; meet with GRS Coordinator to check-in, when needed; field questions and communicate in situations, as needed;
  • Train the Professional Development Student Worker/Peer Advisor and check-in throughout the semester;
  • Serve as a Fulbright Program Advisor for the Conservatory, working closely with the Fellowships and Awards Office; advise students on all aspects of the application, including edits and feedback to their Fulbright proposal narratives and personal statements; serve on the Fulbright internal panel that interviews and evaluates applicants;
  • Disseminate relevant student opportunity announcements and a monthly all-student email newsletter; maintain office handouts and online resources available to students;
  • Facilitate 2-3 workshops throughout the year on Professional Development topics; visit studio classes on occasion to promote the office resources available to students;
  • Serve on campus committees, as needed;
  • Attend regular meetings with the Director of Professional Development and the PACE Division, providing support, as needed;
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Degree in music (undergraduate required; graduate degree preferred) or equivalent experience;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the music industry including best practices in portfolio careers, self-marketing, nonprofit organizations, and community engagement;
  • Demonstrated experience in grant-writing within the arts;
  • Excellent written and oral skills;
  • Demonstrated interest in undergraduate teaching and advising;
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi‐task, take initiative, establish priorities, and function with minimal supervision;
  • Success with independent and collaborative work; 
  • A positive outlook on the capability of our students;
  • Ability to work with diverse populations—defined broadly—of students, faculty, staff, and guest artists, as well as a deep personal commitment to the institution’s values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging;
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience as a professional musician is preferred;
  • Ability to advise students from multiple musical genres on higher education music programs, summer music festivals, and international opportunities;
  • Experience with audio/ video editing and other relevant software for musicians;
  • Successful teaching and/or mentorship at the college level;
  • Previous experience offering career advising to music students;
  • Experience in developing and maintaining a flexible and dynamic musical career;
  • Understanding of the range of professional opportunities available to musicians are desirable qualifications.
