This position is responsible for the organization and oversight
of a comprehensive programs supporting student affairs, from
applicant to graduation. This position will collaborate on
initiatives with the Vice President of Graduate Medical Education
Services who will focus on the successful residency match of
students graduating from Undergraduate Medical Education. The Vice
President for UME functions as the primary student advocate in
responding to student needs in providing resources to assist them
during medical school.
This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and supervises
AACOMAS staff. The position oversees the Council relationships with
COMAO (Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers), COSGP
(Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents), CSA
(Council on Student Affairs and CSFAA (Council of Student Financial
Aid Administrators). The position will oversee COSGP and CSFAA
along with the Vice President (or designee) of the Office of
Government Relations.
The primary activities include recruitment of medical students, the
operation of the application services (including oversight of the
centralized application service, AACOMAS), and all programs and
activities supporting student success as they enter and complete
medical school.
Specific duties include:
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• In conjunction with application services and recruitment team the
VP will develop, maintain, and evaluate a national recruitment plan
that is aligned with AACOM’s strategic plan and the needs of the
colleges of osteopathic medical. This includes engaging the Council
of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO) in developing
plans for recruitment and optimization of the application
service.
• Accountable for the effective operation of AACOMAS (the
association’s centralized application service, which is currently
outsourced to Liaison International) and overall responsibility for
service products, such as the AACOMAS application and WebAdmit.
Ensures that the service meets operational and qualitative
standards for verification and customer service functions. Leads
and coordinates system updates and the annual system launch.
Develops and maintains application and system procedures and
policies. Works closely with the VP for Marketing and Communication
to ensure adequate marketing and education about osteopathic
medical careers, schools, AACOMAS. Cultivates and maintain
relationships with the member college admissions officers and
supporting staff, planning productive group meetings, and offering
proactive communications with the membership.
• Accountable for analyzing the effectiveness of the AACOMAS Fee Waiver Program, serving medical school applicants. Develops policies and procedures and monitors implementation to assure that the Fee Waiver Program meets AACOM’s goals and mission [this is a marketing program, not a diversity program].
• Provides financial and business management services for AACOMAS, to include review of fee structure with the Finance Department input and approval and development of revenue projections for budgeting purposes.
• Monitors policies, regulations, trends, and new technologies in
university admissions, student services, financial aid, effective
support initiatives for historically underrepresented minority
groups and other diverse populations; develops appropriate AACOM
activities to support the colleges in their recruiting and student
services activities.
• Provides updates and reports to the Finance Department and to the CEO and President, and upon request, to the Board of Deans, other constituent groups and stakeholders on the status of AACOMAS, recruitment, admissions, and other student facing UME activities.
• Drives constituent relations, ensuring the service retains a high customer focus for applicants, health professions advisors, and colleges.
• Plans meetings, works with committees, and responds to member requests as the official AACOM liaison to the COMAO and Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO). Acts as the professions’ representative to National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), assuring the COMs are represented well nationally and regionally. Participates in the Federation of Associations of Schools of Health Professions’ (FASHP) Central Applications Service Group. Serves as a co-liaison to the COSGP and CSFAA in support of the student voice in UME.
• Serves on the association’s executive leadership team and collaborates closely with ELT members to meet strategic plans.
• Responsible for budget for AACOMAS, recruitment, other UME student services, and council activities.
• Performs other management and program development duties, as
assigned.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
A master’s degree or other advanced degree in Higher Education and
Student Affairs is required. Minimum of 7-10 years of mid-level or
senior management experience is required including budget
development and monitoring.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and experience in medical education recruitment,
admissions and student affairs is required. Experience in
developing, implementing and evaluating programs is required, as is
experience in networking and coalition creation. Experience working
with outreach to historically underrepresented minority groups and
other diverse populations is required.
Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite. A basic
understanding of statistical analysis is preferred. Excellent
written and oral communication skills, including public
presentations, are essential. Must be organized, creative and have
the ability to work independently as well as with others and be
able to work well under pressure.
