Preceptor in Mathematics

Harvard University

Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Department of Mathematics

Position Description: The Department of Mathematics seeks applications for a Preceptor in Mathematics. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2022. The Preceptor will be responsible for teaching two courses each semester as well as doing a substantial amount of administrative and mentoring work. Preceptors work side by side with senior faculty on teaching, developing, and supporting sections of entry-level courses through multivariable calculus and linear algebra.

The position is for an initial appointment of three years and may exceptionally be renewed for another three years, contingent on performance, curricular need, position availability, and divisional dean approval.

Basic Qualifications: The successful applicant should have an advanced degree in mathematics and a record of excellence in teaching introductory courses in undergraduate mathematics.

Additional Qualifications: Applicants should have a sophisticated understanding of undergraduate teaching, learning, and curricular issues. Successful candidates will have the experience necessary to teach and develop a broad range of service courses; we are especially interested in candidates with documented expertise in curriculum development and mentoring and training other teachers. Essential qualities include initiative, good judgment, and the ability to work well on a team.

Special Instructions: Please submit the following materials through MathJobs. Priority will be given to applications received before November 15, 2021 but applications will be processed on a rolling basis with a deadline of December 1, 2021. If you are planning to attend the Joint Math Meetings we encourage you to submit your application before the priority deadline.
