The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Center for Information Technology Services is recruiting for a Systems Administrator and/or Senior Systems Administrator. Working both independently and on a team, this position has a role in the installation, support, and maintenance of servers, storage systems, or operating systems. The position assists in the planning of unscheduled service outages and infrastructure problems, performs configuration and programming for systems-related projects, and assists in the development of computational infrastructure that will be built using the latest technologies in high-throughput and high-performance computers and enterprise class storage systems.

Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.   Essential Functions:   The System Administrator will apply intermediate level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision-making occurs within general guidelines and requires significant interpretation. Manager defines work guided by goals and objectives. Manager assists with unusual situations. Solutions require considerable analysis and evaluation of various alternatives. Independently anticipates needs and requirements to resolve non-routine matters.
  • Perform operating systems administration, development, installation, maintenance, and upgrade for assigned department(s), such duties as adding/deleting users, setting up/changing workstations/servers, backing up and recovery of data, data archiving, security, and installing/restoring data.
  • Document day-to-day operations procedures and protocols associated with hardware and operation system environments, as well as reviews system monitoring and logging of abnormalities.
  • Ensure security and integrity of operating system to increased efficiency for users, applications, operating systems management, etc. Assists in the evaluation of new technologies and products.
  • Provide technical support for the client workstations and resolves system and program issues for all applications utilized by the staff, including upgrading of operating systems to support new applications.
  • Assist in upgrades to hardware and software based on existing operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  The Senior System Administrator will apply in-depth, senior level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Wide latitude in decision making to interpret unclear or inadequate guidelines. Manager and Senior Administrator will collaborate to develop goals and objectives. Confers with manager only on controversial or far reaching matters. Proactively resolves broad and unique matters requiring sophisticated analysis and interpretation. Acts as resource to others.
  • Working independently or overseeing a team the senior position has a lead role in the installation, support, and maintenance of servers, storage systems, or operating systems.
  • Leads in the planning of and responds to service outages and infrastructure problems. Configuration and programming for systems-related projects. Using the latest technologies in high-throughput and high-performance computers and enterprise class storage systems develops computational infrastructures.
  • Oversees and performs operating systems administration, development, installation, maintenance, and upgrade for assigned department(s), such duties as adding/deleting users, setting up/changing workstations/servers, backing up and recovery of data, data archiving, security, and installing/restoring data. 
  • Follows established policy and recommends process changes for operating system policies that would ensure security and integrity or lead to increased efficiency for users, applications, operating systems management, etc. Assist in the evaluation and acquisition of new technologies and products. 
  • Makes recommendations for upgrades to hardware and software based on existing operations, pending needs and available budget. Advises on new applications to be developed.
  • Responsible for interfacing with other campus technologists and department team members to ensure integration of systems and applications are succinct. 
  • Provide technical support for the client workstations and resolves system and program issues for all applications utilized by the staff, including the upgrading of operating systems to support new applications.
  • Frequently has team leadership responsibilities and provides training to other IT professionals. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  Qualifications    System Administrator   Education: Bachelors in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field.   Experience: One (1) year experience with proficient knowledge of at least one (1) operating systems, such as: Windows, Mac OS, and (RedHat/ Suse/ Solaris/ AIX/ HPUX). Experience working with public cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure is preferred.   Senior Systems Administrator   Education:  Bachelors in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field.   Experience:  Four (4) years of experience with proficient knowledge of at least two (2) operating systems, such as: Windows, Mac OS, and Unix/Linux (Red Hat/Suse/Solaris/AIX/HPUX). Experience working with public cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure is preferred.  Related experience may be substituted for education.   Preferred candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Active Directory DNS analysis, design, implementation, management, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Active Directory group policy object analysis, design, implementation, management, reporting, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Active Directory infrastructure administration, design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Active Directory schema administration, design, performance tuning, and troubleshooting
  • Active Directory security analysis, implementation, reporting, troubleshooting, and validation
  • General DNS concepts and related troubleshooting
  • Enterprise data backup concepts, job monitoring, and job scheduling
  • General server infrastructure health monitoring & alerting
  • IT asset tracking and inventory management
  • Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure administration, design, implementation, and monitoring
  • Network firewall concepts, rule concepts, and related connectivity troubleshooting
  • Script writing, testing, and maintenance using PowerShell, VBScript, BAT file, or similar
  • Server infrastructure security analysis, implementation, reporting, troubleshooting, and validation
  • Windows OS administration using the command line
  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
