Job Summary

The FGCU Complete Student Navigator is responsible for the delivery of a year-round strategy of proactive outreach to students that promote and advance the Department's mission of improving degree access and timely degree completion of (adult, non-traditional) students.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assigned with the lead role on counseling and advising on complex issues and problems regarding admissions, student academic and degree progress, as well as financial matters.
  • Serves as the experts on institutional, state, and federal policies related to admissions, enrollment, and financial policies. Researches and resolves complex issues in these areas that require external support from other business units
  • Communicates new information to team and helps to update the team’s policy document.
  • Collaborates with college advising and student services offices through outreach efforts across the campus community to promote collaboration and improved service to students. Has direct responsibility and accountability for increasing enrollment, retention, and graduation rates. Develops curriculum and educational materials to support new initiatives.
  • Serves as internal resource on the team to help with more complex admissions decisions.
  • Works on one-time key assignments or assumes responsibilities for reoccurring tasks essential to business unit’s operation.
  • Participates in developing new initiatives and leads project to implement program enhancements.
  • Conducts independent diagnostics and problem resolution in a broad range of areas and issues. Exercises authority to implement changes and make exceptions to students’ financial and academic records.
  • Develops training materials for Coordinator I’s and Program Assistants and provides on-going training to staff to ensure they remain as experts in compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
  • Trains and provides daily priorities to student workers in the business unit
  • Advises on federal, state and institutional regulations and assists decisions-making through weighing different options.


Other Duties:

  • Advises, enrolls, and retains prospective adult degree completion candidates.
  • Implements strategies to promote retention and success of FGCU Complete students.
  • Conducts outreach to identified students and take necessary steps to address their concerns: identification of core issues, triaging concerns when appropriate, connecting to appropriate departments when necessary.
  • Provides relevant solutions by analyzing student academic and career history to provide advice on potential good matches for degree programs including credit via accelerated options.
  • Provides resources and information about careers, workforce requirements and opportunities within Florida and beyond.
  • Collaborates with University departments to provide resources to adult, non-traditional students
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of assigned area.
  • Serves on institutional committees representing the interests of the department.
  • Represents FGCU Complete at off-campus events.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Four years of professional full-time experience working directly with non-traditional adult students (e.g., through academic advising, career counseling, or experience working with adult education or non-traditional adult students).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience advising special student populations.
  • Experience with student recruitment, retention, and support.
  • Experience with career exploration and alignment of student interests with academic programs.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Extensive experience advising Florida State College system transfer students in the pursuit of an Associate in Arts Degree.
  • Experience with career counseling or workforce development.
  • Experience facilitating student orientation and retention programs.

  • Knowledge of student development theory, the needs of students in transition, and the core elements of student success.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strength and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work when numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
