Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
As the custodian of the constituent experience for the VCU Office of Development and Alumni Relations, the executive director works with stakeholders universitywide to enhance engagement efforts that increase engagement, retention and philanthropic results. The executive director directs a team of solicitation, stewardship and digital engagement leaders who execute multichannel marketing and retention strategies in a variety of marketing platforms, such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud or a similar system.

In this role, you will:
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders throughout the university to set data-driven marketing campaign strategies and implement systems and procedures that allow for robust, constituent-tailored messaging and automated experiences across multiple channels, resulting in increased engagement, retention and philanthropic participation.
  • Collaborate with AVP for Strategic Marketing and Engagement to drive the strategic adoption of new marketing systems and the constituent-tailored marketing strategy.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders, DAR Communications and campus partners to identify goals, timelines, budgets and content requirements for strategic marketing campaigns.
  • Aid in the formulation and execution of strategies and tactics for email, digital, mobile and direct mail, including solicitation and retention campaign management and donor lifecycle.
  • Set strategy for managing email deliverability, subscription management and compliance with communications and solicitation policies.
  • Leverage marketing technology to automate campaigns where possible while applying customization and personalization.
  • Research and analyze trends and recommend new marketing initiatives and changes in campaigns to increase results.
  • Design and develop technical solutions to address unique business needs and build out complex journeys to enhance engagement efforts and to guide the constituent experience with mindfulness toward satisfaction.
  • Effectively manage and lead a team, recognizing and acknowledging their skills and activating their strengths to achieve goals.
  • Establish policies and procedures associated with the platform and how it impacts business operations.
  • Work closely with DAR Communications team and campus partners to present differentiating content in its most compelling form to drive emotional engagement and philanthropic commitment.

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business or related field.
  • Seven to 10 years of professional experience in building and executing marketing campaigns resulting in increased engagement, retention and philanthropic participation.
  • Creative problem-solver and out-of-the-box thinker who can effectively collaborate with stakeholders throughout a matrixed organization to get those things done.
  • Ability to articulate how to best engage with key constituencies throughout the engagement lifecycle.
  • Outstanding listening and communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Experience with working with large data sets and suggesting segmentation strategies.
  • Ability to quickly learn new analytic systems and deeply evaluate the technical components of a product from a business perspective.
  • Knowledge of best practices for digital campaigns, email marketing, annual giving and stewardship (preferably for nonprofits or higher education institutions).
  • Deep knowledge of the digital landscape, including emerging trends across social and fundraising platforms, with an understanding of utilization, benchmarks, and strategies.
  • Extensive understanding of the importance of analytics in fueling all digital decision-making.
  • Ability to conceive, execute and manage philanthropic processes within a highly complex organization collaboratively and effectively.
  • Ability to create and refine business processes to most efficiently and effectively deliver digital solutions.
  • Must be confident and capable of juggling multiple priorities and projects while working strategically, collaboratively and inventively.
  • Results-oriented and data-driven with an innate ability to tell the story behind the numbers.
  • Ability to build small collaborative groups, run meetings, delegate to direct support and peers, and lead discussions of strategy with campus leadership. Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a university professional at VCU .




Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Master’s degree in marketing, communications, business or related field.
  • Ten to 15 years of professional experience in building and executing marketing campaigns resulting in increased engagement, retention and philanthropic participation.
  • Power user of Salesforce Marketing Cloud or similar system.
