Opportunity

Nationally recognized nonprofit venture philanthropy seeks a full-time Program Officer to join the founding team of EF+Math, a fiscally sponsored inclusive research & development (R&D) program. EF+Math aims to dramatically improve math outcomes for students in grades 3–8, with a focus on Black and Latinx students and students experiencing poverty, by strengthening executive function skills. We create approaches to challenge the way people think about how students learn. We want every student to know their innate abilities, know how to use them to take control of their own learning, and be given every opportunity to learn rigorous math.

Organization

NewSchools Venture Fund is a national nonprofit that looks for the people with the ideas that are going to change education and open doors for all children. The call has never been more urgent to innovate — to bring new approaches and new organizations that will give every child a great chance in life. Each and every child has a fundamental right to a real education — one that leaves her ready to create a fulfilling life, make positive change, and help build an equitable future for everyone. Yet, too many children — especially in Black, Latino and low-income neighborhoods — don’t have access to the learning opportunities they need.

Responsibilities

The Program Officer is a senior member of the team, responsible for managing a portfolio of R&D projects supported by the EF+Math Program and assisting with vision and implementation of program evaluation strategy. The Program Officer will work in close collaboration with the Educator Co-Design Manager and the Designing for Equity Manager to advance our Inclusive R&D model which is equity-focused, research-informed, and designed with educators at the center. The Program Officer reports to the Program Director and will manage a Program Analyst and Evaluation Manager. You will have the ability to work remotely from anywhere in the U.S., though if you are based in the Bay Area, you will be able to work from our office in Oakland, CA when it is safe to do so.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

    • Work closely with the Designing for Equity Manager and Educator Co-Design Manager to understand awarded R&D team needs and provide programmatic support in key areas, including but not limited to equity-centered, inclusive design and development, educator engagement, math teaching and learning, executive function, and research and evaluation.
    • Contribute to the strategy and execution for ensuring data privacy and security are the highest priority for the EF+Math program and its awardees.
    • Contribute to the design and execution of community learning events that support community in key areas such as equity, mathematics teaching and learning, executive function, inclusive research and development, and product development and scale.
  • Supervise and continuously improve EF+Math’s approach to program impact evaluation and ensure key insights are distilled into the field
    • Manage and support one FTE (a Program Analyst), and one independent contractor (an Evaluation Manager).
    • Supervise EF+Math’s equity and human-centered approach to understanding Program Impact, including a strategic approach to capturing each awarded R&D team’s progress toward program goals (including prototype development and inclusive R&D process goals) through quantitative and qualitative data.
    • Supervise and support an Evaluation Manager who will envision, solicit, and monitor the work of external partners to independently evaluate prototype learning systems developed through EF+Math.
    • Codify and disseminate key findings from the program - including the value of learning science based program/product development - for diverse audiences of researchers, developers, practitioners, and policy makers.
    • Collaborate with Program Management and Improvement team to drive improvements to EF+Math’s awardee management approach.
