Communication Specialist

The Physics and Astronomy Department is seeking aCommunications Specialist who will be responsible for performing a variety of communications-related tasks for IDIES. These include: administration, maintenance, and content management of the IDIES main website and subsidiary websites, as well as administration and maintenance of social media presence, including IDIES email lists, Facebook, Twitter. This will also include creation and dissemination of information via social media and IDIES email lists, and creation of printed publications and multi-media presentations to promote and share IDIES-hosted research, seminars, and conferences.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Web Design and Content Management

  • Contribute to the design of websites and web pages for IDIES websites and web apps. Create page graphics, layout and flow as required.
  • Collect, write, and upload news items, event announcements, status updates from IDIES members to the website.
  • Update websites using the content management system, WordPress.
  • Act as point of contact for faculty and staff for website content management.
  • Collaborate with IDIES researchers, faculty, and administrators to develop and check design requirements.
  • Identify resource needs, perform quality review and control; and manage timelines effectively.

Training

  • Keep up-to-date with industry standard practices; improve full stack web development capabilities.
  • Stay current with technology and media trends, suggest new, related activities to IDIES faculty and staff.

Publications & Marketing

  • Works collaboratively with the administrative manager, IDIES affiliates and staff to develop and produce IDIES print and virtual publications.
  • Collect content, edit, and distribute IDIES newsletter three times a year to IDIES members.
  • Serve as point of contact for all IDIES communications projects. Write and edit science and other related news content for JHU news outlets.
  • Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with University branding guidelines and JHU Use of Name guidelines.

Miscellaneous

  • Maintain email lists and databases of IDIES members
  • Perform assessments on the effectiveness of media-related activities.
  • Serve as point-of-contact for non-IDIES members, and provide timely answers to all inquiries regarding IDIES and its functions.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience in technical writing, documentation and technical publications preferred. Knowledge of front-end web development technologies such as HTML, XML, CSS, and JavaScript, PHP, ASP, database authoring tools. Experience with full-stack website creation, setup and management, including development, test and release management.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Knowledge of and proficiency with the WordPress Content Management System. Experience with video manipulation tools, and graphics/presentation tools such as Dreamweaver, Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, and PowerPoint. Experience in implementing quality assurance and web site security. Ability to think conceptually about web design and knowledge of current best practices and internet-based marketing and communication including social media. Strong communication skills are essential to interact with various constituencies and Hopkins staff and to prepare appropriate written materials. Must be flexible with ability to prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities, and to establish work priorities when necessary.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
