Position Description Summary: The George Washington School of Nursing (SON) seeks an Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to serve as a key advisor and partner to the Dean of the School of Nursing and be part of the school’s senior leadership team. This full-time, 12-month non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will begin January 1, 2022 or later. This position is located on our Ashburn, Virginia campus. Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities can include but are not limited to:  

  • promoting an environment of inclusion through the development, delivery and evaluation of training programs, events and activities for SON’s faculty, students and staff
  • developing and recommending policies, processes, and initiatives which lead to a diverse and representative faculty, staff and student population
  • providing leadership and vision for the diversity and inclusion efforts of the School through convening the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council, on behalf of the Dean
  • taking leadership and accountability for the School’s strategic plan for diversity, equity and inclusion
  • in partnership with the Office of Marketing and Communication, coordinating SON official response to internal and external crisis or emergency incidents regarding DEI related matters
  • ensuring that DEI programs are developed in a timely manner, administered conscientiously, and evaluated regularly for their effectiveness.
  • seeking external funding, as available to finance diversity initiatives
  • serving as a centralized resource and as an advocate for student, faculty, and staff equity and inclusion within the organization.
  • evaluating and assessing institutional data relevant to diversity and the success of DEI initiatives
  • administering the Office of DEI budget to ensure that funds support the goals and activities delineated in the SON Strategic Plan
  • sharing expertise and representing SON DEI efforts externally through publications, conference presentations, and speaking engagements
  • consulting with faculty leaders on curriculum development, revision and delivery on diversity, inclusive teaching and learning across all programs
  • collaborating with other GWU DEI offices both in programming, evaluation, and the identification of best practices
  • developing and disseminating an up-to-date DEI office activity and event calendar
  • remaining current regarding professional developments, current research, and national trends in the field
  • teach academic courses as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Earned doctoral degree by the date of appointment
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of service and/or scholarly work advancing diversity initiatives
  • Minimum of 2 or more years of teaching experience
  • Experience in academia or in national organizations representing academic nursing or the health professions
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong communication skills and the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion
  • Knowledge of the culture of higher education and the issues of access, inclusion, diversity, equity, and multiculturalism in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of current DEI research and emerging issues in health education, training and practice
