Associate Dean - Career Programs



Harold Washington College (HWC)is one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago. HWC is located in the Chicago Loop and serves nearly 11,000 students. HWC is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority Serving Institution (MSI) with more than 70 percent Latinx or Black students. The college offers an exceptional liberal arts and sciences curriculum and programs in Business, Early Childhood, Architecture, and Digital Media. HWC is City Colleges’ Center for Business. The college is also home to the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program and is currently the only community college in the city to offer a business degree accessible entirely online. In addition, the college has program partnerships with leading industry organizations such as Aon, Year Up Chicago, DePaul University, and the Joffrey Ballet.

JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Dean of Career Programs works in tandem with the Dean and faculty to strategically plan for the effective management, conduct, and evaluation of general education and career programs and initiatives in order to achieve optimal learning outcomes and ensure student success. The position also works collaboratively with other Associate Deans across departments in providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction for all credit and non-credit programs at the college. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provides leadership and coordination in the design, implementation and continuous improvement of credit and certificate programs and services, in alignment with current and emerging industry needs
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and industry partners on curriculum development and the implementation of courses and programs, with a focus on teaching excellence, student learning and success, assessment of outcomes, and the continuous improvement of programs.
  • Provides for effective channels of communication between college and district level administrators and faculty to ensure the integrity of the educational programs, the enhancement of current and changing program offerings, and the introduction of new technologies within the department.
  • Cultivates productive partnerships with industry and business partners and maintains day-to-day relationships, working collaboratively to assess the relevancy of coursework, identify emerging skills and hiring trends, and to procure new internship and externship opportunities.
  • Administers and manages apprenticeships and internships for careers programs, and provides administrative support to practicum programming and capstone courses required for the completion of various programs.
  • Identifies and recommends staffing needs to the Dean. Interviews and recommends the selection of discipline specific part-time faculty; participates on committees for the selection and hiring of full-time faculty.
  • Within guidelines set by Board/Union Collective Bargaining Agreements, evaluates full-time and part-time faculty to ensure continuity of quality classroom instruction for both the credit and certificate programs.
  • Pursues and follows through with issues of concern and assists in resolving problems, including but not limited to student or faculty complaints, and follows appropriate procedures for their resolution.
  • Responsible for employee supervision and accountability for both direct and indirect reports. Promotes and facilitates professional development and application of new learner-centered teaching strategies.
  • In support of the Dean, works closely with Department Chairpersons to maintain academic and logistical operations including course scheduling, faculty assignment, and ordering of textbooks.
  • Collaborates with college administrators and the Business Office in the development, monitoring, and management of budgets and the allocation of resources.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards; participates in ICCB mandated program reviews, HLC institutional accreditation activities and accreditation processes for individual CTE programs.
  • Provides leadership in identifying outside funding opportunities and writes proposals to seek grants and external funding for specific projects and program initiatives in collaboration with the District Office.
  • Works with the Office of Research in planning for the collection and assessment of data to evaluate departmental programs and courses, create improvement plans, and recommend new curricular offerings.
  • Represents the college to community organizations and agencies and participates on district-wide committees.
  • Serves as weekend and/or evening administrator for the College.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • Five years of work experience as a college administrator, program chair, faculty member, or related program management experience
  • Demonstrated excellent supervisory, administrative, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of planning, program development, evaluation, and budgeting, preferably in a community college setting
  • Experience working in a unionized, higher education setting preferred
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
