As one of North America’s leading professional organization for college and university music faculty, The College Music Society (CMS) invites applications for the position of Executive Director, which, as of Summer 2022 will be reconfigured as a half-time position, compensated at a comparable executive-level salary and benefits. CMS seeks to attract a diverse pool of candidates whose work has championed EDI values and preferably holds a successful track record in research, teaching, and service in any discipline in music; and reflects knowledge of higher education policy curricula and the disciplines that comprise CMS. The ideal candidates will have demonstrated leading change while cultivating communities in which people align through identity and shared values within and across various disciplines.

In collaboration with officers and the elected board, the Executive Director will continue to define CMS’s distinctive role among other professional organizations within and across music disciplines. With the President, the Executive Director will be able to innovate within, guide, and articulate CMS’s vision and embrace its mission while exploring partnerships across and outside the organization with a goal to broaden the Society’s identity in the changing landscapes of the music profession.

The Executive Director must have a proactive administrative style, possess philanthropic understanding with successful experiences in fund raising and an understanding of grant writing while also promoting professional integrity within the organization.  In order to be successful, this leader must be a clear communicator and a reflexive listener, and be able to effectively manage, energize, and examine the roles of the professional staff and a large number of volunteers so that they are effective in their efforts on behalf of the organization. Leadership experience in the arts or academia, administrative experience, and knowledge of issues in music in higher education are essential.

The CMS Executive Director will provide strong visionary and administrative support for the organization, staff, and volunteers, assuring a positive workplace culture and a service orientation toward the membership.  In collaboration with the President of The College Music Society, the Executive Director will serve as Chief Executive Officer with fiduciary responsibilities, and will assist and support the Board of Directors, Officers, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee. This position includes seeking philanthropic opportunities and serving as a liaison for the CMS Fund; building trans-organizational collaborations, including maintaining and expanding effective liaisons with education, business, and governmental organizations; administering elections and assisting with appointments of officers; overseeing the annual meeting of the membership; and overseeing professional activities, information services, career development, membership development, and engagement initiatives.

The Executive Director will supervise the Operations Director, who has oversight responsibility for multiple areas including but not limited to staff supervision, fiscal management, records maintenance, corporate status and documents; oversight responsibility for effective dissemination of information concerning the organization via traditional and emerging print, electronic, and social media; and provides administrative support for CMS Books and Monographs and Symposium and services of the organization to its members and the larger public.

CMS continues to be committed to leading the profession towards a more promising future that includes moving the organization and guiding the music profession towards spaces that are decidedly anti-racist.

Please send the following materials electronically through the CMS vacancy link:
1) cover letter indicating interest in and qualifications for the position; 2) a current curriculum vitae; and 3) a list of 5 references including names and complete contact information.  Review of files will begin on October 1, 2021. Start date: no later than July 1, 2022.  The College Music Society is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. CMS welcomes applications without regard to age, race, gender national origin, disability, religion, marital or parental status (including pregnancy), protected veteran status, military service, genetic information, sexual orientation or gender identity.
