Job Description Summary

Auburn University Libraries seeks a collaborative, innovative and user-centered leader to guide and direct the services of the Research and Instruction Services Department. The Head of Research and Instruction Services will provide leadership and work collaboratively in creating and implementing best practices along with innovative and adaptive strategies to support Auburn University’s excellent teaching and growing research enterprise. Auburn University is a recently designated R1 institution with a very high level of research activity. The individual in this position will lead the portfolios of information literacy instruction, HelpDesk services, student learning and engagement, and subject liaison coordination. The Department, with tenured and tenure-track librarians, strives to be at the forefront of the use of current and emerging digital reference technologies as well as the use of leading information literacy pedagogies.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this individual will work collaboratively with other Libraries department heads to carry out the strategic goals of Auburn University Libraries. This twelve-month tenure-track faculty position requires professional and scholarly activity as well as service on library and university committees.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Coordinate and support a team of subject librarians responsible for instruction, student learning and engagement, and liaison activities.
  • Work collaboratively to develop innovative and responsive user-focused services and programs such as: reference and information services, information literacy instruction, and outreach programs to support student, staff and faculty excellence in teaching, learning, and research.
  • Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of course-integrated face-to-face, online and hybrid information literacy instruction in collaboration with teaching faculty.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and evaluate high quality library faculty.
  • Foster an adaptable, flexible, and responsive departmental culture in an environment with evolving library and campus priorities.
  • Mentor library faculty in the Department and contribute to faculty career and professional growth, development, and retention.
  • With other department and unit heads in the Libraries, promote a positive work, organizational, and educational culture that supports professionalism, a collegial spirit, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Participate actively in local, State, and national library professional organizations.
  • Serve as a member of the Libraries’ Leadership Group.
  • As a member of the Libraries Faculty, serve the University, contribute to the profession, and engage in professional development.
  • Some night and weekend duty may be required.
SALARY / BENEFITS : Starting salary of $65,000. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience/qualifications. This is a twelve-month tenure-track position. Benefits include 20 days of vacation leave/12 days of sick leave per year; participation in State Teachers’ Retirement System (mandatory); additional voluntary retirement plans available; health/dental/life/disability insurance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master of Library Science or similar graduate degree from an ALA, or equivalent, accredited program at the time employment begins.
• Demonstrated leadership in one or more of the following areas: providing reference, instruction, academic outreach, or liaison services.
• 3-5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in library user services and instruction.
• Experience with instruction, and knowledge of information literacy theory and best practices.
• Demonstrated commitment to user-centered services for reference, instruction, outreach programs, and training as evidenced by examples from prior work experience.
• Commitment to excellence in professional development to meet the ever-changing needs of a large research university.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; strong and effective written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently; evidence of ability to initiate and carry projects through to completion.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute collegially and productively in a team environment.
• Potential to meet university promotion and tenure requirements for library faculty.

Desired Qualifications

• Supervisory experience including assigning work, managing personnel, and evaluating performance.
• Demonstrated experience working with a diverse community of researchers and colleagues.
• Demonstrated knowledge of commonly used research tools for data analysis in contemporary research.
• Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in universal design and inclusive pedagogy.
• Experience in delivering research and instructional services in an online learning environment.
• A record of professional, scholarly research activity.
