Job Summary

In support of this commitment, the Title IX and Gender Equity Officer is responsible for providing strategic leadership of the University’s efforts to comply with Title IX and support gender equity.

Reporting to the Vice President for Strategy and Chief of Staff, the Title IX and Gender Equity Officer serves as the University’s subject matter expert on Title IX implementation and is tasked with the following core responsibilities: monitoring and overseeing the University’s compliance with Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the Clery Act and other related federal and state laws and regulations; California State University (CSU) Executive Orders 1095, 1096, 1097 and 1098 and any superseding University policies; and other CSU or campus regulations, policies or agreements related to Sex Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct, Dating Violence and Domestic Violence, Stalking, and related Retaliation (collectively referred to throughout the remainder of this position description as “Sex Discrimination including Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct and related Retaliation”); ensuring a centralized, timely, fair, compassionate and comprehensive response to reports of Sex Discrimination including Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct and related Retaliation prohibited by Title IX, VAWA, the Clery Act, and applicable CSU policies and other federal and state laws; overseeing the investigation of formal complaints involving students, faculty, and staff alleging Sex Discrimination including Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct and related Retaliation prohibited by Title IX, VAWA, the Clery Act, and applicable CSU policies and other federal and state laws; working within the SJSU community to educate students, faculty, and staff about available supportive measures, reporting options, and the University’s process for responding to formal complaints of Sex Discrimination including Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct and related Retaliation; and collaborating with campus partners in their educational and training efforts to prevent and address sexual misconduct.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of Title IX and relevant federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to problem solve, prioritize, analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • In-depth knowledge of effective practices for developing and implementing Title IX compliant protocols and processes for a large, public college or university.
  • Deep experience in conducting Title IX investigations and writing investigation reports.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of campus constituents.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn data and information management systems.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community and government agencies.
  • Experience in facilitating the informal resolution of complaints in accordance with Title IX.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, planning, and management skills along with previous experience supervising cross divisional and cross departmental teams.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence; proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse campus community, including first-generation students.
  • Ability to address stressful situations while maintaining composure and contribute to a collaborative environment utilizing exemplary communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to supervise the work of staff and recommend appropriate personnel actions.
  • Ability to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum five years of high-level or progressive responsibility developing, overseeing, and/or implementing a Title IX program in a higher education setting
  • Experience conducting investigations involving sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of interpersonal violence


Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or Master’s degree in Social Work, Gender Studies, Psychology, Public Health, Higher Ed. Administration, Education and Educational Psychology or other closely related fields
  • Experience in Higher Education and/or the CSU system
  • Knowledge of CSU Executive Orders




Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
