Lycoming College seeks a Director of Library Services to enhance the Library’s academic impact through shared vision and creativity.  The Director is responsible for providing overall direction and oversight of library operations and services including: collection development, coordination of library technology, assessment, development of policies and services, library facilities, budgets, college archives, administrative services and supervision of library staff.  This position requires commitment to collaboration, reference and student instruction, campus and library outreach, and leadership through promotion of teamwork, diversity, and inclusiveness.

As an integral part of academic leadership, the Director will work collaboratively to establish the vision for the library and leverage initiatives and resources to contribute to the strategic goals of the college. The successful candidate will be a passionate professional committed to enhancing student engagement with librarians and library information resources in and out of the classroom while also engaging with the wider campus community by creating opportunities to promote and support research, learning, and teaching. Supported by an experienced library staff, the successful candidate will promote, assess, and evaluate library programs and services to meet the needs of contemporary users. At the same time the Director will mentor and facilitate professional development of the library staff. This position serves as the Library’s representative through advocacy to relevant college groups and also represents the college by attending and participating at local, regional, and national library organizations and consortia.

Due to these important roles, the Director of Library Services should demonstrate leadership qualities that foster a positive work and learning environment, knowledge of emerging issues facing contemporary academic libraries, a commitment to responsive and innovative services, a strong record of building library resources, and commitment to enhancing the college’s teaching, learning, and scholarly community.

The Snowden library houses an extensive print and on-line collection as well as the college archives.  Library faculty have a long history of collaboration with Lycoming College faculty from across a broad range of disciplines.  These partnerships range from classroom teaching to research collaborations.  Library faculty are active scholars, participating members in regional and national professional organizations and conferences, and contribute to campus governance and committee service. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science
  • Minimum of five years of experience in academic libraries with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Successful experience teaching information literacy in collaboration with faculty
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information technology as it relates to libraries and the ability to develop collaborative vision for its uses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including administrative and management experience in academic libraries with an emphasis on strategic planning, budget management, and staff supervision and development
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication, pedagogy, and librarianship such as copyright, plagiarism, intellectual freedom, technology, and assessment
  • Experience in collection development and knowledge of library systems
  • Record of scholarly achievement

All professional librarians at Lycoming College have dual appointments to the library faculty and to the administrative executive staff. Full-time library faculty have faculty voting and committee service responsibilities.

Key skills the successful candidate must have:

  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Actively participate in the library instruction program
  • Foster collaboration between members of the library faculty and with other campus constituencies.
  • Develop a strategic plan for the library that is informed by assessment data.  Set priorities that are consistent with long-term goals
  • Engage in governance and service roles, on campus and in professional organizations
  • Be an advocate for the library and its role in the academic life of the campus.
