The New School is committed to creating and maintaining an environment that promises diversity and tolerance in all areas of employment, education and access to its educational, artistic or cultural programs and activities. The New School does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, sex or gender (including actual or perceived gender identity or expression or transgender status), sexual orientation, sexual and other reproductive health decisions, pregnancy, religion, religious practices, mental or physical disability, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, veteran status, marital or partnership status, or any other legally protected status.

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School invites applications for a four-year, full-time, Renewable Term Appointment as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning to begin July 2022. Responsibilities include teaching seven (7) courses per year, advising undergraduate students, assisting the Director of Quantitative Reasoning with curriculum development, administering placement tests, and program assessment. The faculty member will be expected to participate in the activities of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (and its Interdisciplinary Science major), where the position resides, as well as those of Eugene Lang College and The New School. Integration and implementation of pedagogical best practices in quantitative reasoning and literacy, mathematics, and statistics are expected, as is participation in the QR/QL academic community as demonstrated by activities such as attendance at conferences, faculty development workshops, and participation in on-campus and off-campus initiatives focused on quantitative literacy across the curriculum.   Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have clear ideas for cultivating a positive learning environment within diverse groups of students and will be aware of the unique assets and challenges of an urban teaching and learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to, diversity in race/ethnicity, LGBTQ status, gender identity, socioeconomic status, familial education background, permanent residence (e.g., international, domestic, local), and career trajectories. They will also be able to adapt course material for students in a variety of academic programs (e.g., liberal arts, design) and majors. In particular, a core student constituency for Quantitative Reasoning are students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design at The New School. It is expected that, although candidates may have a mathematics background, they are able to engage with visual learners who possess a strong interest in business strategy and creative industries. The successful candidate will also show evidence of their dedication to inclusive learning environments and inter- and multi-disciplinary learning for social good. They will demonstrate an ability to use a range of creative, student-centered instructional strategies, including technological tools, and reflect on their effectiveness to better foster student learning.    Preferred Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D., or an expected Ph.D. by June 2022, in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or a related quantitative field (perhaps in the social sciences). Evidence of excellence in teaching, experience with curriculum development, and effective interactions and collaborations with students, faculty, and staff are essential.    The New School is committed to creating and maintaining an environment that promises diversity, equity and inclusion  in all areas of employment, education, and access to its educational, artistic, or cultural programs and activities. The New School does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, sex or gender (including gender identity and expression), pregnancy, sexual orientation, religion, religious practices, mental or physical disability, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, veteran status, marital or partnership status, or any other legally protected status.
