UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME.  The Program of Liberal Studies (PLS) seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor in musicology beginning August 2022. The area of specialization is open, with a preference for candidates with teaching or research interests in aesthetics. Scholars with a broad liberal arts education and/or interdisciplinary experience are especially encouraged to apply.

PLS is a multidisciplinary, liberal arts department with 150 undergraduate majors. Founded in 1950, it has its own tenure-line faculty drawn from various disciplines and committed to an integrated program of studies grounded in reading core texts from a broadly Western tradition with an additional emphasis on the Catholic intellectual heritage. Undergraduate teaching responsibility will be a 2-2 course load, including the Program’s Great Books seminars and its required course on “Music and Meaning,” which provides an introduction to musical hermeneutics and examines music's place in the history of aesthetics. The candidate might also contribute to other disciplinary-based courses in the department as appropriate and may have opportunities to teach in the Department of Music (http://music.nd.edu) and graduate program in Sacred Music at Notre Dame (http://sacredmusic.nd.edu). Before applying, prospective candidates are strongly advised to explore the department’s website (http://pls.nd.edu) to learn about the Program.

Ph.D. required. Strong publication program, evidence of superior teaching, and a commitment to undergraduate education expected. Salary and research support are more than competitive.

The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and administration. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to building a culturally diverse workplace. We strongly encourage applications from female and minority candidates and those candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and requires affirmative action by covered contractors to employ and advance veterans and qualified individuals with disabilities in compliance with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a).

Please submit a cover letter, CV, three confidential letters of recommendation, and a brief writing sample (e.g., an article or book/dissertation chapter). PLS is dedicated to building an inclusive community and curriculum with a diversity of voices. Candidates are encouraged to reflect in their cover letters on how they might contribute to those goals within the context of the Program and the broader mission of the University (https://www.nd.edu/about/mission/). Deadline: September 24, 2021.
