Stonehill College invites applications for the inaugural James E. Hayden Chair for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Social Justice, to begin in July 2022. The faculty member will serve as the Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice and will hold the endowed chair for the term of the directorship. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2021.

Candidates should have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree and a record of research and teaching excellence in one or more fields concentrating on studies of race, ethnicity, and social justice. Scholars with a focus on the U.S. and those who work comparatively or transnationally are encouraged to apply. Candidates should also have a proven record of administrative and leadership experience and a demonstrated commitment to student experience and inclusive academic excellence. The director will work with a faculty steering committee and external advisory board to create a vision for the Center’s future. Experience mentoring faculty, developing programming, and directing/supporting undergraduate and/or graduate research strongly preferred. The director will be appointed as a faculty member with tenure in a suitable department; the directorship will be held for an initial three-year term, renewable for additional terms. We welcome applications from non-tenured faculty with strong records of publication who may qualify for tenure at Stonehill.

The newly created Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice is an innovative home for interdisciplinary teaching, research, and programming on race, ethnicity, and social justice at Stonehill. Offering the Hayden Lecture Series, co-curricular events, and undergraduate research opportunities that bridge academic experiences and student life, it will also house a new major and minor. The Director will be joining a vibrant group of current faculty affiliated with the Center and will have the opportunity to partner with relevant entities on campus, including the Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Office of Intercultural Affairs, and the Faculty of Color Association. The Center’s work will be further supported by a cluster hire of at least three tenure-track faculty members with scholarly expertise in U.S. and comparative (transnational, postcolonial, global) studies of race, ethnicity, and social justice. The Director will work with academic departments to hire an interdisciplinary team into existing faculty lines and to ensure curricular, co-curricular, and research support for the Center.

The directorship will include the following responsibilities:

· Teach a 0/0 load in the first year, and a 1/1 load subsequently during the tenure as Director, with additional summer research support available. (The typical faculty teaching load at Stonehill is 3/3.)

· Work with department chairs, Deans, and Provost to plan searches for a cluster hire of three tenure-track faculty members who will become affiliates of the Center.

· Lead the faculty steering committee and the Center’s external advisory board.

· Mentor and advise affiliated faculty.

· Plan and oversee the Hayden Lecture Series.

· Work collaboratively to establish areas of thematic study and research, invite speakers, design a schedule of events, and coordinate programming

· Plan, launch, and direct the major and minor.

· Cultivate undergraduate research opportunities.

· Develop and monitor Center budget.

· Develop protocols and processes to ensure institutional compliance with stewardship requirements.

· Create an annual report on the Center’s activities.

· Promote the Center and the College to a broader public audience and on a regional and national stage.

The position includes start-up funds, moving benefits, and sabbatical leave opportunities.
