Position Summary
The Student Communication Specialist is an entry-level position that strategizes how best to clearly communicate with prospective and current students across a variety of media. They will utilize strong writing skills, best practices in communicating with Generation Z and Millennials, and an understanding of the student experience to help students successfully navigate their college careers. The position will also support other email needs for campus including some departmental communications and assist in writing and editing marketing copy and feature stories.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Writing, English, Business, Marketing, Communication, or a related field
- Minimum one year of professional writing experience
- Evidence of ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, including forming strong working relationships with both internal and external constituencies
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences and people from underrepresented groups
- Experience writing, designing, and scheduling emails
- Knowledge of HTML and CSS
- Graphic design skills and competency with Adobe Creative Cloud software
- Understanding of digital accessibility issues and their solutions
- Experience working in higher education, especially an Admission Office
- Familiarity with the Fort Lewis College culture
Major Responsibilities
- Strategize effective overall communication with a variety of student types, including prioritizing messages and determining the correct media for each message
- Write clear and understandable copy for materials that target prospective students and other influencers, including emails, website, texts, social media, and print materials
- Write clear and understandable copy for materials that target current FLC students
- Be an expert on Admission processes and policies and communicate them to a variety of audiences via marketing materials, email communications, and other media
- Be an expert on Fort Lewis College academics, community, and culture and communicate about those things to a variety of audiences via marketing materials, email communications, and other media
- Use drag-and-drop and html design software to create mobile-friendly email content
- Edit and clarify copy written by academic and administrative departments
- Edit and manage the student-facing newsletter, FLC Insight
- Manage the MarComm events calendar in coordination with Event Services
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
- Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation
Salary is $45,000 per year plus a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date is September 15, 2021.
