Mission or Goal of Unit
The mission of the Department of Biostatistics is to improve human health through methodological research, graduate education and collaboration with health science researchers on biostatistical methods and applications. Our focus includes designing and helping conduct novel clinical trials for investigating potential cancer therapies. We collaborate with public health research teams on complicated hierarchical, multifaceted health problems. As educators, we aim to train the next generation of biostatisticians, bioinformaticists and data scientists in methodological, collaborative and leadership skills.

The mission of the Massey Cancer Center is to serve as a comprehensive center of excellence in cancer research, prevention and control, patient care and education. Our guiding principles are to make important discoveries about cancer and to translate these discoveries rapidly into better prevention, detection, treatment and control of cancer to enhance the quality of life of all individuals affected by cancer. The Department of Biostatistics and the Massey Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated center at Virginia Commonwealth University, invites applications for a tenure-eligible faculty position. We are seeking an innovative, energetic, and collaborative candidate with strong leadership skills who will strengthen our vision of building a statistical and computational framework in all areas of data science, with particular emphasis on the integration of clinical trial research. The candidate is expected to share our commitment to graduate education by teaching courses and supervising graduate research.

Primary responsibilities include taking an active role in the design and conduct of Phase I/II clinical trials, develop independent methodological research in related areas of interest, and collaborate extensively with researchers at the VCU Massey Cancer Center and the VCU School of Medicine. Position Responsibilities
Teaching
The faculty member shares a deep commitment to effective instruction, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development related to the Biostatistics graduate program. They demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests, especially in the context of interdisciplinary research interests that complement the program. He/she will assist with the preparation and implementation of training programs. The faculty member will contribute to the teaching mission and will be engaged in training of students and faculty and will deliver lectures, contribute to course development and implementation in the Department of Biostatistics. In addition, the faculty member will mentor capstone projects of master-level students and supervise dissertation research.

Research
The faculty will engage in research and develop interdisciplinary collaborations in support of the core mission. Strong training and research in clinical trials and applications of statistical methods to biomedical sciences are required. The faculty contributes to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high-quality publications, citations, and national recognition through honorific awards and committee leadership) and maintains active involvement in appropriate national or international organizations and bodies. The VCU Massey Cancer Center ( MCC ) conducts basic science, translational, clinical, and population sciences research on cancer, and includes scientists and physicians from 36 academic departments, 6 schools, and 1 college at VCU . Spanning across multiple cancer types, the key interdisciplinary scientific programs at the MCC include Cancer Cell Signaling, Cancer Molecular Genetics, Cancer Prevention, and Control, Developmental Therapeutics, and Radiation Biology and Oncology.

Service
Faculty members will serve on Departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.)

The faculty member will serve as the Co-Director for the Massey Cancer Center Biostatistics Core. He/She will be expected to assist in developing extramural grant applications in collaboration with cancer center investigators, including SPORE, program-project, and other multi-project grants, The Faculty member will provide expert biostatistical guidance in the design, conduct, and analysis of research projects conducted by cancer center members, and offers training in the fundamentals of design and analysis to the Massey cancer research community. The Co-Director is prepared to apply existing methods of design and analysis and also to modify or develop new methods to address novel design and analysis issues arising in cancer research projects. The Co-Director is active in the Clinical Trials Scientific Review and Monitoring Committee, providing a thorough review of all proposed protocols, with the aim of ensuring that all clinical protocols are designed to efficiently and ethically achieve their clinical and translational objectives. Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, or an equivalent terminal degree

  • Record of peer-reviewed publications and conference dissemination demonstrating expertise in the faculty area of research

  • Teaching experience at the masters or doctoral level

  • Extensive cancer-relevant research experience

  • Proven extramural funding track record

  • Proven trainee & faculty mentorship skills

  • Experience with MPI, P01, and/or SPORE grant applications

  • Expertise in statistical design & execution of early phase clinical trial development

  • Commitment to teaching excellence, have the potential for establishing collaborations across the University, as well as develop and lead a multidisciplinary, independent research program, and secure external grant funding

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral research training experience
