The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional Internal Medicine leader to join the Department of Medicine as the Division Chief for General Internal Medicine. Successful applicants will be eligible for appointment at the Associate or Professor level, should have significant experience in academic General Internal Medicine, and be board-certified in Internal Medicine.

BACKGROUND

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has been made to enable its development and success. The Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016 and graduated this first class in 2020. In February 2020, the Dell Medical School received full LCME accreditation. The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 129 faculty and 68 residents, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine. The Department is comprised of 11 Divisions, and collaborates closely with other Departments in the School of Medicine and across the UT Austin Campus. The Division of General Internal Medicine is comprised of 14 faculty, along with supporting staff members. We are partnered with a number of care delivery organizations in the Austin / Travis County community, including the Seton-Ascension system, Community Care, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for our residents.

JOB SUMMARY

Development of a strong primary care presence and infrastructure for care delivery, education, and research are essential for meeting the goals of Dell Medical School.

The Division Chief will be responsible for collaborating with key internal and external partners, reporting to the Chair of Internal Medicine to design, implement, evaluate, and improve all aspects of the ambulatory General Internal Medicine experience. The Chief will also work with the Associate Chairs and Department Director on initiatives related to our clinical, educational, research, and faculty development missions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruiting and mentoring diverse faculty physician and non-physician General Internal Medicine providers; to include annual appraisement and promotion and tenure activities
  • Collaborate with community health systems and other Dell Med clinical leaders and partners to develop new models of care and deliver outstanding care
  • Working closely with academic leaders of the Dell Medical School to continue to develop and implement an innovative residency curriculum in General Internal Medicine
  • Communicate and coordinate with leaders in the Department and school to ensure excellent undergraduate education in General Internal Medicine
  • Creating a supportive environment for, and collaborating with, researchers to conduct General Internal Medicine research
  • Precepting students and residents in our clinical settings and providing direct care for a panel of primary care patients

Qualifications
  • MD degree with residency training in Internal Medicine; General Internal Medicine fellowship training in health services research or education preferred
  • Able to be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor level
  • Experience mentoring junior faculty, students, residents, and fellows
  • Strong teaching skills
  • Training and experience in leading quality improvement initiatives
  • Significant record of academic scholarship
  • Experience in leading one or more academic primary care practices preferred
