Job Description

The Center for Advanced Separation Technologies (CAST) in the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering (MME) is seeking a Project Manager (PM). The Project Manager will be responsible for administrative and fiscal oversight of CAST sponsored projects and be a member of the MME fiscal team.
The Project Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day programmatic, administrative, budgetary, and contractual aspects of sponsored research programs, in support of principal investigators who are responsible for both the development and technical execution of research programs. The Project Manager will work with research staff to clearly identify and document project requirements, develop work breakdown structures and realistic schedules, and manage resources. The Project Manager will ensure principal investigators are kept abreast of project status and issues. The PM will manage program personnel loading and program expenditures such as purchasing and travel; ensure appropriate contract burn rates; prepare initial drafts of sponsor reporting requirements. The Project Manager will maintain awareness of upcoming business opportunities with sponsors and will work with principal investigators to coordinate and develop project proposals, including development of schedules, resource/spending plans, and budgets.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Public or Business Administration, Project Management or related discipline. Or bachelor's degree in a related technical or professional field with significant relevant professional experience.
  • Ability to work as a team member in developing and managing projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated experience delivering formal and informal presentations, written proposals, and reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills and the ability to work in teams with professionals from other disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to take on broad tasks, independently identify the steps necessary to execute them, ensure their proper execution, and succinctly convey their results.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in formal project management, contracting, financial management, and research proposal development.
  • Experience managing federally funded research programs.
  • Experience working in academic research environment, including with students.
  • Formal training and certification in project management such as CAPM or PMP.
