The Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland is seeking to fill a position of Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies. This is a full-time 12-month, non-tenured position with promotion opportunities. The sociology department is committed to excellence in our undergraduate program — we offer a rigorous curriculum and our faculty have been repeatedly recognized with teaching awards.

The Director of Undergraduate Studies is responsible for administering the undergraduate office, leading efforts to enhance and innovate undergraduate teaching, and working with other faculty to shape the undergraduate curriculum in preparation for future growth opportunities. In addition to administrative duties, the Director will teach undergraduate courses. The precise teaching load is negotiable with the Chair.

Other duties involve working with faculty to help them become more effective teachers, including developing and supporting efforts to use technology and other methods to innovate and evaluate teaching within the department. This position will identify courses that require lecturer support and onboard and mentor faculty for these roles. The remaining duties of this position include supervision of undergraduate advising staff and ensuring excellent service to students, parents and the campus community. The position requires the ability to work with students, faculty, and administrators as well as excellent public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Founded in 1856, University of Maryland, College Park is the state’s flagship institution. Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., and the nexus of the nation’s legislative, executive, and judicial centers of power. This unique proximity to business and technology leaders, federal departments and agencies, and a myriad of research entities, embassies, think tanks, cultural centers, and non-profit organizations is simply unparalleled. Synergistic opportunities for our faculty and students abound and are virtually limitless in the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. The University is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding and diverse faculty and staff that will enhance our stature of preeminence in our three missions of teaching, scholarship, and full engagement in our community, the state of Maryland, and in the world.
