The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University announces the search for its next director.

Established in 1954, the Center merged with Stanford in 2008 but remains financially and programmatically independent. An influential innovator in the social and behavioral sciences, the Center facilitates advances in basic theory, research, and practice. It has hosted generations of scholars and scientists who spend a year as fellows and fosters an atmosphere of collaboration on issues of critical importance to our society.

The fellowship program brings together scholars and major thinkers from the United States and other countries. The fellows reside at CASBS for 9 or 10 months. They typically bring expertise in behavioral and social science fields such as anthropology, biomedicine, economics, education, geography, history, law, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychiatry, psychology, sociology, and statistics.

The Center also leads a series of programs, projects and training institutes. Programs, which are relatively broad in scope (such as one on the New Moral Political Economy), extend for terms of 3-5 years and may generate specific projects. Training institutes, which may last two weeks, build new fields and model ways to collaborate in the study of certain topics, such as Comparative Politics of Climate Change Policy.

The search committee welcomes your nominations of candidates for the position of the CASBS director. Please use this form to share with the committee why the person or persons nominated would be suitable for the position. We would prefer to have nominations submitted by September 1, 2021.  We expect that the new director will take office in time to welcome the entering class of fellows in the fall of 2022.
