Visiting Assistant Professor of German

The Department of German and Russian at Williams College seeks dynamic, engaged candidates for a three-semester visiting position in German with two courses per semester, to begin in the spring semester of 2022. Specialization open (from the eighteenth century to the present). A passion for teaching is a must; specifically, the successful candidate will have significant language teaching experience and innovative ideas for upper-level courses. A comparative or interdisciplinary focus is welcome since the teaching will likely include courses in English cross-listed with related fields (e.g., Comparative Literature, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, History, Art History, etc.). Our program is founded on close student-faculty interaction as well as vibrant, rigorous scholarship.

Ph.D. strongly preferred. Native or near-native proficiency in the language is required.

We seek applicants who can demonstrate in their supporting materials a capacity for equitable and inclusive teaching, and a commitment to working effectively with a student, staff, and faculty population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ability, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check. Further information is available here: .

Application Instructions

We actively invite applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in German Studies. The application timeline is as follows: 1) Candidates will submit through Interfolio a cover letter, CV, and three reference letters by October 15, 2021; materials should be addressed to Janneke van de Stadt, Chair, Department of German and Russian. Fax and email applications will not be accepted; 2) The department plans to conduct online video interviews with 8-10 semi-finalists in early November. During the 30-minute interview, candidates will be asked to discuss their research and teaching experience as well as ideas for language and content courses; 3) One finalist at a time will be brought to campus for an interview in early December. Finalists will be asked to teach a sample language course and do a colloquium with members of the department and other relevant colleagues and students, based on a writing sample that will have been circulated beforehand; 4) We hope to make an offer by the end of the first semester.
