As the 4th largest public college of education in the country and the 3rd largest college at UGA, the Mary Frances Early College of Education ( MFECOE ) improves the lives of residents of Georgia and beyond through our instruction, research, and service. The MFE COE is a comprehensive college with disciplines focused on teacher preparation, counseling and human development, communication sciences, human movement sciences, career development, student affairs, and educational administration and policy. We place significant emphasis on graduate education with approximately 40% of our students at the graduate level, making us the second largest college at UGA with respect to graduate education.

The Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education ( CLASE ) invites applications for an Assistant Research Scientist. This is not a tenure track position.

CLASE is seeking an individual who can immediately contribute to the provision of program development, intervention implementation, and professional development services provided by CLASE . The assistant research scientist’s responsibilities will comprise three main areas of focus: 1) the continued development of a large professional development model on the research based collaborative, conversation-based pedagogy – Instructional Conversations (IC); 2) the development, with the CLASE leadership team, of research/practice partnerships with school districts to investigate the implementation and impacts of the IC pedagogical model on student achievement, social emotional learning, and language development; 3) the preparation of national and foundation grant proposals to support this research, as well as manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals to disseminate the knowledge learned to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences. The assistant research scientist will mentor the team of CLASE graduate assistants on the various research projects and ensure that the project goals are met. This work is pivotal to support the Center’s established work in seeking extramural funding and dissemination of findings.

CLASE is a research and development center housed within the University of Georgia’s Mary Frances Early College of Education. CLASE’s mission is focused on improving the educational and life outcomes of culturally and linguistically diverse ( CLD ) learners across the state of Georgia and beyond. CLASE blends research, professional development, and direct services to CLD learners in a multipronged effort to advance the science of intervention while providing pre and in-service educators and others with the tools necessary to meet the needs of the growing and increasingly diverse population of CLD learners in our state. Much of this work is done in the context of research-practice partnerships in collaboration with PreK-12 district partners. CLASE supports efforts to ensure that CLD learners have equitable access to educational opportunities by: providing educators with professional development and intervention services in research based pedagogies; researching the impacts of these interventions and pedagogies (e.g. the Instructional Conversation (IC) pedagogical model) on CLD learners and all students; and, working with partners and stakeholders to develop strategic plans for how to best address the needs of CLD learners.

CLASE faculty and core staff include individuals with expertise in education, linguistics, psychology, applied cognition and development, pedagogies targeting CLD learners, special education, teacher professional development, and K-12 administration. • Demonstrated expertise in collaborative, conversation-based pedagogies (e.g. the Instructional Conversation pedagogical model)
• At least three years of experience designing and implementing professional development opportunities for PreK-12 educators
• Proficiency in grant writing*
• Evidence of designing and implementing qualitative and mixed methods research in PreK-12 settings*
• At least one year of experience working with CLD learners
• At least one year of experience supervising graduate students
• At least three years of experience leading and working with collaborative, multidisciplinary research teams

To forward and support the program development regarding the PD work that CLASE is undertaking, e.g.

• Plan and deliver high quality professional development and intervention services to PreK-12 pre and in-service educators, administrators and districts
• Provide support in the development of district strategic plans for IC sustainability
• Provide support in the development and management of our IC international partnerships
• Develop tools and presentations for the professional development initiative

Percentage Of Time 45 Duties/Responsibilities
To forward the research and writing regarding the PD work that CLASE is undertaking, e.g.

• Take the lead in CLASE’s program development with district partners including research-practice partnerships
• Contribute to the dissemination of evidence and research-based practices to a range of audiences through a variety of mediums including: our IC Platform, conference presentations, white papers, peer-reviewed journal publications, etc.
• Conduct research in collaboration with CLASE associated faculty

Percentage Of Time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
To forward the mission and support the reach of CLASE and the College of Education, e.g.

• Seek opportunities for external funding and prepare proposals to support CLASE’s activities
• Design and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, as needed
• Respond flexibly to the needs of the Center and COE
