Counselor - Accessibility Services

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
Provide exceptional care to students by using your knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 to counsel students regarding disability and educational accommodations. Evaluate disability documentation and utilize an interactive process to determine student/visitor service eligibility and reasonable accommodations to provide access to the campus and curriculum. Maintain accurate records in a professional and confidential manner in keeping with ADA and FERPA requirements. Required Qualifications:
Masters degree in one of the following areas: special education, counseling, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, or a closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the American Disability Act (1990) and the Amendments Act, Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 (1973), GRAMA, FERPA, HIIPA, and other federal and state statutes and case law.
  • Knowledge of a variety of disabilities, their impact, and accommodations including accessible technology that provide access to an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning principles and other instructional strategies that provide academic access for students with disabilities.
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skilled in the use of technology such as Microsoft Office (word processing, excel, power points), virtual meeting software such as TEAMS, and the ability to learn new/emerging technology and software.
  • Ability to use professional judgment to determine and approve reasonable accommodations including accessible technology for students and visitors.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic information including medical, psychological, and learning assessments to determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to problem-solve, work collaboratively, and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to stay current in best practices in the field of accessibility services.
  • Ability to manage unexpected potentially urgent, difficult, and/or crisis situations.
  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours.





Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a disability services related field such as accessibility services, special education, or vocational rehabilitation.

Physical Requirements:
This position performs work in a standard office setting.
