Simon Fraser University

Burnaby/Vancouver/Surrey

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is Canada’s most community-engaged research university, with three thriving urban campuses in British Columbia’s largest municipalities: Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey. SFU acknowledges the Squamish, Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, and Kwikwetlem peoples on whose traditional territories the University’s campuses stand. The SFU community includes more than 35,000 students and nearly 3,000 faculty and staff. SFU is in the top tier in terms of research impact, consistently ranking among the top 20 Canadian universities in terms of its annual research income, which was over $150 million in the most recently completed fiscal year.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) is an internationally recognized leader in broad-based liberal education whose strength lies in its diversity, high-caliber curricula, world-class pedagogy, innovations in research, and its vibrant academic community.  With 23 undergraduate departments and programs, FASS has approximately 11,000 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students supported by over 300 faculty members.

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will serve as a member of SFU’s senior administration with shared responsibility for the overall management of the institution. Through strategic and visionary leadership, the Dean will encourage an interdisciplinary approach, support academic excellence, and continue to enhance the advancement of research, scholarship and teaching. They will continue to build an enhanced student experience and will attract and support world-class faculty members.

As the ideal candidate, you will have an exceptional record of scholarship and a demonstrated track record of success in academic leadership. With a passion for academic excellence and the student experience, the Dean will be committed to collegiality, collaboration, and transparency. Through strong people skills, an inclusive approach and respect for diversity, inclusion and reconciliation, you are a proven relationship- and community-builder with the vision and strategic skills necessary to advance SFU’s academic mission, nationally and internationally.

This is an exciting opportunity for an academic leader whose passion, communication and strategic skills will enhance the reputation of the Faculty within the broader community.
