The Department of Medicine Division of Nephrology seeks aResearch Assistant in translational and clinical research is available in the Department. The research group of Dr. Chirag Parikh, Director of the Division of Nephrology, has several ongoing clinical research studies (seehttp://tribe.jhmi.edu/) including the recently funded NIH study in Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP). The KPMP studyaims to analyze and evaluate human kidney biopsies to create a kidney tissue atlas, define disease subgroups, and identify critical pathways and targets for novel therapies in acute and chronic kidney diseases (see https://kpmp.org/).The position involves direct patient interaction, collection and processing of human blood and urine specimens, medical chart abstraction using electronic health records, study database data entry, conducting literature reviews, manuscript writing, and participating in team meetings.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Principal Investigator and Program Manager in developing and implementing study-operating procedures related to recruitment, retention, study visits and specimen bank while ensuring quality control procedures are followed.
  • Screen potential participants in person by interviews and/or by telephone to determine if participant is eligible for the study.
  • Responsible to determine patient study eligibility and to identify potential candidates who might be interested in participate in the study.
  • Schedule research subjects including production of calendars and schedules for the participants.
  • Responsible to maintain source documents, double data entry and accurate record keeping of all study related information and data verification as assigned.
  • Manage assertively REDCap software.
  • Maintains CRMS system by continuingly updating patient status upon study visits
  • Conduct data collection tasks including collection, handling and tracking of biosamples from outpatient visits. Interact with in-house personnel (nurses, phlebotomist, and core lab techs) to request, track and collect inpatient samples.
  • Conduct in-person and over the phone interviews with participants to ascertain contact information, health provider, medical history, medical information, social history and literacy test (only in-person visits). In addition, obtain physical exam information.
  • Responsible for assisting in conducting study research visits at the outpatient clinical research unit (ICTR-CRU) and JHU hospitalization units.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Requirements for the position include BA/BS in the Life Sciences or completion of the Pre-Medical track.
  • Prior experience in a research laboratory or hospital is preferred but not required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Physical Requirements:

    Sitting in a normal seated position in office setting. Standing and/or walking for extended periods of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal range. Ability to move about.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.
