Position Information: 

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is a University System of Maryland (USM) Regional  Higher Education Center (RHEC) offering upper-level undergraduate and graduate education in Montgomery County, Maryland. The John and Effie Macklin Center for Academic Success,  in collaboration with USG’s university partners, contributes to the goal of producing a “highly educated and skilled workforce,” by providing customized academic services and disability support. The Macklin Center assists students with developing strategies and applying learned skills to achieve their academic goals and become independent learners.  

Under the supervision of the Director for the Macklin Center for Academic Success, the  Assistant Director will provide general management and oversight of the operations within the  Macklin Center. Specific responsibilities include assessment and evaluation of programs and services; management of marketing and communications for the center; supervision of peer-led programs; supervision of disability support services; responsible for providing direct writing and academic coaching support services for undergraduate and graduate students. Some evening and weekend work is required. Additionally, the Assistant Director will be responsible for making decisions in the absence of the Director. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Required Education: 

▪ Master’s Degree in Education or related field required.

Required Experience:  

▪ At least seven years of experience in higher education with duties directly related to the responsibilities and duties specified on the job description. 

▪ At least two years of experience with direct service to graduate students; ▪ Experience creating and implementing new student support programs; ▪ Experience with hiring and managing staff. 

Preferences: 

Education: 

  • Ph.D or Ed.D in a related field a plus. 

Experience: 

  • Experience with managing STEM programs and/or advising STEM students preferred • Experience with disability support services and/or learning support services preferred 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of teaching and learning strategies applied to a wide range of academic disciplines. 
  • Knowledge of learning theories and strategies effective with students in need of differentiated learning techniques. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic cultures, rules, and regulations including knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). 
  • Ability to effectively work with a diverse student population, staff, and faculty members. 
  • Ability to provide one-on-one academic learning support to students especially in writing and study strategies. 
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing;  excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision on a variety of tasks with demonstrated capabilities to think critically and proactively problem-solve. • Ability to analyze data and generate timely and accurate reports from a variety of data sets and/or databases. 
  • Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to details. • Proficiency in software and technology to support the delivery of services to students  (i.e. Google Suite, Blackboard, Zoom, etc.)

Physical Demands 

Professional environment. Limited physical activity includes transporting informational materials to and from various outreach events. Ability to lift 25+ lbs. This position requires working some evenings and weekends as needed.
